OT - watering newly laid St Augustine Grass

I realize this isn't a fig topic. If you want send me a private message. I just laid a few squares of St Augustine grass this past Monday. I have been watering every 6 hours for 30 minutes a time. When I put cups out to measure and see how much water that is. In one area that is 1/2 inches a time in another area that is 1/4 inch. Is that too much to little. I have searched all over the internet and can't find a recommend on how much water is needed. What does everyone think? I want the sod to benefit but on the other hand don't want my water bill through the roof. Miss the days of a well for watering.

I think you are watering way too much.  This site looks like it has some good info.  http://www.walterreeves.com/lawn-care/st-augustine-planting-sod/

So should I go to every 12 hours @ 30 minutes? Would be about an inch a day. They don't give real good intel for new sod.

I would water once a day, about 1/2 inch should be good.  You can tell if the grass is looking green and growing some that it is getting enough water.  If it looks like it is drying out water more.

Th second part is what is vague. Is that an inch of water twice a day, 1/2 inch or what. What is considered dry? I wrote the Chap in Georgia to see if I can get clarification.

This time of year it should not take a whole lot of water, less on cloudy days.   Plus if you get a good rain you won't need to water for a few days.

I laid my entire backyard full of St Augustine in the middle of Aug.  I also read a lot of confusing information.  I went with watering it until it heard that squishy sound beneath my feet when walking on the sod.  I only watered once a day.  I looked for browning sod and hit that with the hose.  Not scientific, but it worked for me.

I don't think you need to water it every 12 hours.  The grass won't lose much moisture at night, so once in the day should be plenty to get it through the day.

Do you have any idea how long of time each watering was?

Water heavily but infrequently. You want to encourage those roots to go deep, it's okay if the top dries out a little. I'd say water for about a half hour every 24 hours, if not every couple of days.

Here are a couple of pictures of the sod I laid. Wish I could afford to do the whole yard. It is easier to pay $1.50 per square 24" X 18" Vs nearly $300 for a pallet.
