OT: Why are paw paws not more popular?

Ed, yours that fruited in 3 years were they grafted named varieties?? I've read they will produce quicker than a seedling (which I've heard at least 6 years).

My 3 year old seedlings are just under 3 feet tall so I know I have at least another 3 years for them to be large enough to fruit.

I'm in NC and I've looked and non of my local nurseries sale them and I can't find wild ones near my house/county :/ if I could try them I'd probably buy trees but I just want to try it first lol.

Hi,
Last week, I saw some here in a botanical garden.
The trees are big -large and high- and not very productive in quantity  - for the one(s) I saw ... That might be a reason for them not being more cultivated.
Regarding cross-pollination, I couldn't be sure if there was one lone tree or 3 grouped. But they had some fruits on the floor under their branches.
Just for you to be sure, I'm outside your continent :) in Europe. Pawpaw are not grown here except for some in botanical gardens.

I have a grafted paw paw called mango and the ones pictures here are either sunflower or overleese.  The plants are about 8 feet apart. paw paws and figs 028.JPG

What did you think of it, Vladis? It looks amazing and also like a named variety ( sunflower?).

Yeah, how was that Pawpaw?

I'm happy as a tick on a fat dog!  I got a box of fresh ones in the mail moments ago!  Yahoo!!!!

I just ordered some seed from England's Orchard and Nursery of Kentucky (nuttrees.net). Half a pound of wild pawpaw seed (about 150 seeds) is $24 and shipping within the US is just under $6 which is pretty good for that quantity. He also has seed from hand pollinated crosses of named varieties.

Be careful of pawpaw dried or cooked. They can make you sick. http://growingfruit.org/t/using-pawpaws/2307/28

I only tried them once and wasn't impressed. They had a foul after taste.
