Our Cajun Country visit ;)

We got us an early start to Cajun Country (Opelousas La.)today!
Had a nice visit with Mr. James Robin and on the way back home we stopped by and had a nice visit with Mr. John Mc Millian (Almost Eden nursery) in Merryville La. If you don't have a good laugh with those two gents, something is wrong with your laugher.

And I picked up my O'Rourke fig from JR, can't wait until next year to see how it does.

Thats it?
Oh c'mon there Cecil , tell us a little bit about your trip, did you ask him any questions concerning fig plants that you care to talk about. How far was the ride?
I will email you concerning my unknown.
Look at the thread "email me"

Cecil is holding out on us. You just don't go to Mr J.A. Robin's and get one fig tree and not have something to talk about, when you get back.

This guy just cracks me up! I couldn't wait for him to get back from this trip and give us the Scoop! What's up with that, Cecil? I guess I could go find out for myself  as I only live maybe 2 hours away. Tim

Cecil, glad you made your trip safely and came back with at least one goodie. Although it's hard for me to imagine going there and only leaving with 1 tree. Looking for pictures and story now.

See what i started Cecil?
So spill!!!

Jstall is correct, "You just don't go to Mr J.A. Robin's" when you are 2000 miles away. But he answers his phone, which is almost as good.

Edit,

I missed a zero on "2000".

aaAh Cecil, you got the special bayou bottle that you are not telling.

Cecil,

200 miles= 1 plant.  Not good!

I am delivering in San Diego on Monday.
If all goes well I will visit Jon and I'm taking my 53' trailer with me.
I will clean Jon out! Evan the Bananas.........gone!

Are you impressed?

Hi Guy's

Well we got up even before bright & early yesterday to go see Mr. James Robin. We got there about 10Am, JR was still in his pajamas, now that was a sight.....HEHE, I had saw a picture of him on the Web, it musta bee doctored (sorry about that Leon)but I thought JR was taller, heck he has to use a step ladder to pick strawberry's!
First rattle out of the bag at JR's house was meeting "Bob" now that was an experience, Bob is a beautiful brown & white dog, that just lives to bite ya, Well I think I got my bluff in on him so I made it to JR's door, knocked on it, JR came and said hello Cecil, now I have never met him that I know of, I asked him how did he know it was me, he said he could smell a Texan for a mile, mind ya we wore a nice brand new shower to our visit with him, We met Ms Betty she is a super nice lady, to bad she has that terrible Alzheimer's disease, when she saw Fig picker she got a million dollar size on her pretty face, they did the hugging thing and She was really happy, which made Dorcas just as happy!
Ol Bob came in the house when Dorcas came in, she loves every dog she meets, she reached down to pet him, he started growling, James jumped up and put a muzzle on him, he got no argument out of us on that one, well we sat in JR'S little office and told lies to each other for about an hour, it was a tossup on who won the B/S session, but I really think the Cajun won that one(imagine that)A coon ass and a horses ass in a B/S contest!
Speaking of coon asses & horses's asses do yaw know the difference?........answer, the Sabine River, look it up!
James got dressed and we went out to look his place over, now mind ya bob was right on our trail, well I bent over to look at my little O'Rourke plant and Bob nudged me on the back of my leg, I'm here to tell ya, that wasn't the only thing I thought was on the back of my leg(it could have been a messy situation there if ya know what I'm talking about! As Martin sez, anyhoot, we pulled the plants out of their pots and looked for RKN, none was visible than goodness! I was going to put the plants inside our truck when JR spotted our little Yorkie, Missy hot wheels, he fell in love with her, and started petting her, I told him to watch her she might try to bite him, it was too late she was about to kiss him to death......silly Dawg, Bob wanted a closer look but JR grabbed him before he could jump up on our truck which would have gave me a heart attack, not because of the dog, but I wasn't goofy about our truck getting all scratched up.
Well we visited some more, and told James we were fixin to head back west, he invited us to have lunch with him but we had Cajun food on our minds, the crawfish kind, he was having roast which is fine with us most times, but not when yer in Cajun country, we head out looking for good Cajun food, in no time we found it, pigged out on it and headed for Merrysville La. to Almost Eden's nursery to meet another very nice Cajun Gent. Mr. John McMillian,
he gave us directions to his place and didn't miss one detail, we went straight past him and called him, we had overshot his runway by two mailboxes....HEHE, we had a very nice visit with John and he showed us his operation(he pulled about 5 plants out of their little pots, no RKN vi sable there. like JR had did, both men had some very nice plants, both of them had a lot of plants that had figs on them I might add, anyhow Dorcas was walking Missy, and John pulled a leaf off one plant and told me to sniff that, I did, ya ain't gonna believe this it was what he called a popcorn plant, it smelled just like popcorn, doggone est thing I have ever sniffed of.....well maybe not...HAHA
We told John that I had trucked through Merryville in the 60's to go around the Louisiana State scales(did I just say that?)
I told John that the bridge crossing the Sabine River at Merrysville use to be so narrow two cars could barely meet each other safely on it and no way two trucks could meet and still have their mirrors on the trucks after crossing, When we got to the river I'm here to tell ya, dem Cajuns done got downtown yeah, that bridge is a nice un!

Well before I I close this B/S session, JR said to tell George, Herman and Fignut hello as well as you Mike in Fla.And anyone else he forgot.

We will update ya'll on the O'Rourke fig as time goes by.

Thank you, Cecil, for finally letting us know the details of your trip. I'm planning one of my own pretty quick now, but I don't think I could contain myself well enough to come home with just one plant. Your a better man than me. I'm planning to visit Dalton at Durio's when I go too. Not sure exactly sure when, yet! Does he(JR) have all his varieties available in pots? The reason I ask is I know he ships a lot of bare root field grown plants too. Good luck with your new plant. Tim

Cecil,
glad ya had a grand ole time. Gee i though us forum members were gonna have to use a pry bar to get something out of you for cryin out loud!
It must be nice to see the good man in person along with his wife and pet, i would have been scared as well about a dog not being friendly as i know mine (Butch) can be menacing to folks that come over and i have to put him out in yard.
Anyhoot how did the truck make the run well i suppose its new!
I just got back from daughters band competition they won 1st in there division, bada bing bada boom!
That old jeep of mine ratteld and rolled its way almost 300 miles today and i even heard rust once in a while fall from underneath , aw heck its only got 256,000 miles on it and sits out on driveway every winter.
One day i will break down and the misses and i will get something new.
So the 1 plant you got is called a o'rourke?

Today, I got a surprise call from JR!

He thanked me for me recently sending him a little (free)
Ficus afghanistanica starter plant, for both him and his wife
to enjoy. He said that it is doing very well, and both 'love'
its very beautiful leaves.

Of course, we talked a whole lot more about figs in general,
(the carica kind), including for me to be patient with the
leaves of the O'R fig that I bought last fall from him
(payed+ way in advance).

Also, he mentioned that he just had a recent visit by some
nice 'Texan couple', and that he enjoyed discussing
'fig-matters' with them.

Sooo, that must have been you; Cecil.

Enjoy your new fig acquisitions...

There ya go George

We got to talking about various Fig Forum members, and then George's
name came up, I think I might have brought it up ;-)

This is James Robin's word about George

"George is a very nice man that has bought from me before, He said you were a great HONEST MAN and customer......Shuckins
I already knew all that.

Hi Martin,

First off, congrads to Anna for their FIRST place Showing!

The reason my first thread was short is really because I was sooo tired my butt was draggin my tracks out!

The truck could not have did any better got 20.2MPG we are very happy with it!

And yes we went all the way to Cajun Country for one O'Rourke
and a chance to meet the "man"& Ms Betty" (ole bob was a bonus)

Glad you made a good, safe trip. If I would have known about Old Bob I would have got you to pick up my tree. The last time I got nailed by a dog it hurt, bad!
Cecil, did you read the past post of Gorgi about the O'Rourk not being an Improved Celeste? Did you talk to J.R. about this? I know he told me they were the same.

Hi JA,

Yes as a matter of fact I did talk to JR about if my plant is an O'Rourke, he said it was, the leafs don't look exactly like the leafs on the LSU website, his words were give it time!
I then asked where he got his O'Rourke cuttings from, he said LSU
That was good enough for me!
BTW, James has on the ID tag attached "LSU Improved Celeste"

>>> "George is a very nice man that has bought from me before, He said you were a great HONEST MAN and customer......

Thanks JR and Cecil for the comment.

On the other hand, I am still very, very mad about another certain
forum member that is spreading a false rumor about me,
that I owe JR money for figs that I bought from him.
I always paid JR in a very timely manner and he can testify
for that.

You know very well who you are! A very big shame on you!

i am going to see jr at the end of novenmber. i'm training for our bs contest now :).

Hi Mike

Train really hard!

I know first hand wothout meeting George that he is good , caring, honest,PERIOD.
We have had conversations via email, he has send me plants then said just pay the shipping after you recieve it, has shipped Christmas present not wanting payment at all, has replaced a plant do to my fault , had in past ASKED what is on my Wish list for plants.
C'mon how many folks go thru that trouble , back then when he asked what was on my Wish list and another time sent me a gift that showed me something right there.
He does things in a ole fashion way not seen much anymore, i had mentioned to him i sincerely hope he does not get burned by some moron that does not send payment and ruin this for its rare thing nowadays very rare in my opinion.
George is first class all the way PERIOD and who ever even implied George would not send payment was wrong and does not know George's character
PERIOD.
He has helped many members on both fig forums in a silent way that is not often mentioned, then gets lambasted for Ebay for getting a good price for his plants specifically 1 and thats a shame because if it were not for him some of these plants would not be around perhaps or extremly hard to obtain. We need more many more people like him not folks that try to find fault in others.
Good things come to good people its been said, i hope thats the case with George.
Best Health
Martin

george is solid gold, and anyone who says anything different is obviously not quite in their right mind.

George,
You are very welcome!

It's a shame something like this happens, But I does every once in a while.

I'm done on this one!

i'm gonna tell jr about my giant grasshoppers who will eat a hole on the side of a ripe fig and then they'll make wine in there and get drunk. i find them flopping around the trees just as drunk as can be. i'll do this with a straight face and see what better lie he can come up with :).

He might believe that as when they showed recently on PBS television channel a program on figs called something like Queen of Africa i was taken a back when they showed butterflies on the ripe figs that had fallen to the ground in which they would extend there long feeder into the fig probably the eye.
The narrator said it was like drinking through a straw. He mentioned they were getting tipsy as well and you could see them stumbleing around .
