Over watering, or let dry out?

I'm certain this has been addressed many times but I'm gonna ask anyway.

I up potted my cuttings to 3/4 gallon from perilite bags. Mix is 1/2 compost, 1/2 pine bark.
All but Acciano and Salce have put on new growth quickly, these are still sticks, but I up potted hoping to get them going.

I was wondering what is worse (or best) for new fig plants, drying out, or over watering (keeping them moist)?

i'm pretty sure i kill figs with too much water.

How about them roots?
If not well established, one should not pot-up yet.
Always safe to just keep just-moist ...

Sorry re-read my post and it is confusing.  Yes, they have roots.  All but 2 varieties have top growth as well.

I should have said, is it ok to let newly potted figs dry out?

I use the 2nd knuckle test for when to water, if it doesn't feel moist 2" deep I water, but I didn't know how sensitive new figs were to drying out, yet I could have sworn I read some let their pots dry out.  I do that with cactus, adeniums, and plumerias.

"Always safe to just keep just-moist..."  Sounds like good advice.  Thanks

Not dry and not wet.  Moist.

both. too much water will rot your cuttings. too little will dry up the cuttings.

if you are keeping it indoor, keep it little on dry side, and keep it under humidity dome.

if outside and temp is good, little on the wet side since sun and wind will evaporate the water quicker.

trick is not watering until it's needed. when you notice that the pot is lighter. even then it's tricky. plants outside will feel not too light when it needs water. i look for both light weight and slightly drooping leaves after sun goes down. if it doesn't perk up after sun goes down, and the pot feels light, it needs water

Thanks Martin for clarifying the hard to define 'just-moist' part.

Also, our figs-king/guru (aka., Jon) seems to believe that,
(and in not so many exact words), a happy fig twig in a
0.5 / 1.0 gal pot, initially may not much happier in a new 5 -10 gal pot.
