PARADISO, FRUIT FORM, LEAF FORM EARLY OR LATE MATURING.
I THINK I MAY HAVE IT BUT I'M NOT SURE.

Well, here are the pix of my first Paradiso fruit. This is a very, very nice fig. I sold several plants to people who wanted them, even before I had fruit and knew what it was. They apparently knew how good it was. It tastes as good as it looks. I may have a plant or two available, yet this season, but they will be small if I do.

Also, there is a couple of fruit of my unkown #9 (first year fruiting) which looks very
similar to it, but may be a Green Ischia. So far the skin has been consistently dark
green and deep red pulp. They do tend to split a little.

   i don't know if this is the same fig,
i could probably tell more by the leaf form
which is very large with very pronounced lobes.
from what i tasted this morning it is up there with stella
and my cilento. it is also an extremely hardy and fast grower.
sure wish i could learn to post pictures.

The Paradiso that I sent you two is the same as what Davis has (I donated it last year as a small tree).  It's a bit surprising that they're saying it's the same as their Green Ischia, Fico Verde and Monstrueuse.  I have their M., but never thought to compare the two.  If so, I'll toss it, because it doesn't preform as nicely as the Paradiso.

If anyone is looking to have a cutting of this, I'll soon have gobs when I do my fall trimming.  Just let me know and we can do a trade or for postage.

   fig, leaf looks somewhat similar and so does fruit taste was
great. don't know if fig is dark green or yellowish.
tommorow when i pick the next one i'll compare the inside color.
anyway if it happens to be different i'll be able to offer
some cuttings. how early do yours ripen?

it it rains a lot, Paradiso Gene won't do well. it's a great tasting fig of a good size. however, it has open eye. when it rains, they will swell up and eye will open up rather big. that invites all sorts of flying insects. the taste will wash out too. however, if the rain is not an issue, the fig is amazing.

also have two other Paradiso. Paradiso Nero and Paradiso Bronze VS. the leaves are very very smiliar to Paradiso Gene so far, but they are still very young. just rooted this winter. will have to see how the figs do in next few years.

then there is Joe's Paradiso which is different from the rest.

It sounds like Paradiso would not do well in FL, because of humidity and rain (would this be the case?).

can't say. i refused to grow Ronde dB for about 3 yrs until i decided i have to find it out for myself since everyone's been raving about it. i put it off that long 'cause i heard it doesn't have tight eye. Paradiso Gene does have an issue with rain, but i love the taste of it and for me, it's a keeper.

When Paradiso is close to ripe or ripe would rain fall make the fig split?

mine didn't split. but the eye will get HUGE. that lets in flies, hornets, wasps.. all sorts of flying insects. i had what seems like 3 main crops. the first crop last year was due to unusually high temp. that was very very good. the second crop was mid to late summer. that one was so sweet.. but not overly sickly sweet. then the rain started. i lost most of that 2nd crop. the last one was early-late fall. very few during that time. but they were altogather different from earlier ones. might be due to the cooler weather. it has very strong watermelon taste.

given all the figs i enjoyed out of that tree, i'm keeping it :)

Why is the center of mine so much lighter?  Is this something I could correct with nutrition?

Yes, it seems to be relatively cold hardy.  Mine came from a mother tree in southern MD (zone 7b) that had been growing in the ground unprotected for years.  The original specimen Gene found was growing in the Washington DC area unprotected in the yard of a man of Italian descent.

After the first season of growth (winter of 2013/14) I stored Paradiso(Gene) in a container in an unattached garage.  Then I planted it in the ground this past Spring.  It grew like gangbusters.  In case we get another winter like last year I protected it pretty well with an old carpet surrounded by a tarp with a vent at the very top that is covered by a small bucket. Next year I will probably only pile up some mulch against the trunk.
