Hi,

3 years ago i bought a fig tree from a local nursery that was labeled "Paraíso". I was mainly trying to buy fig trees that were different from what i had, without great concern for its characteristics.

Now, with a bit more experience, i am trying to find information about the varieties i have and this one is mentioned in a few portuguese lists but i have no more information about it. They placed it in the Common group (figs that only produce one crop without need for caprification and they list 2 kinds - Paraíso and Paraíso Branco (white):

 

I was wondering if anyone has any more information about this fig. This year i was expecting its first crop but the drought, chlorosis and one severe insect attack took a heavy toll on the tree and it suffered mid spring and summer loosing most of its leaves and figs. With treatment it looked a bit better and maintained a few figs that are beginning to mature even with the leaves turning yellow and falling (i don't know it October is the normal maturation date for this fig - maybe in normal conditions they can mature earlier)

Could this fig have any relation with the several Paradiso figs i see in several threads in this forum? Or is a totally different variety? Any help and input appreciated.

The open fig in the photo was not fully matured but it was beginning to split and with the rain prognosis i decided to harvest it.

Very good fig. Sweet without being overly sweet, complex "figgy" flavour with hints of berry and another taste i can't exactly define. The skin is very resistant (in a few days i can say if it's rain tolerant) and peels easily but can be eaten and has a sweet taste.

Nice fig! A rather late variety . Although having seen the name mentioned on the DRAPALG papers, like the piece you show, I am convinced that it may be a northern variety.
Around here cannot remember anybody mentioning this Paraiso.   But it's a very nice fig.
and as you say sweet and with great flavors .

Nice fig. Looks well ripened. Jaime, i am finding that in the list theres a fig called bacorinah. Is hebrew bechora is an early fig- most probably 1st early crop or a 1st san pedro- like Nazrati. Also theres a local variety called bechora?? Do you know about this fig? Will try condit.

I can't seem to find any information about it, Francisco. I hope next year the tree does better so i can, at least, confirm if the normal ripening date is this late.

I don't know bechora. Bacorinho is a small green fig. It's mentioned in Condit monograph:

 
I have a friend in the north of Portugal who has this variety.

Despite the heavy rain of the last days, i still managed to collect a couple more figs (these two where protected from the birds).
Although one was overly ripe, they still had a very good flavor.

Condit Paradiso. Described by Cupani (1696), Gallesio (1817), Gasparrini (1845), Duchartre (1857), Pasquale (1876), Savastano (1885), Vallese (1909), Ferrari (1912), and by Tamaro (1948) as Paraíso (probably). Illustrations of leaves and fruit by Vallese. The short Latin description of this variety by Gallesio is under the heading Ficus carica bifera; he regarded the first-crop figs as better than the second. Gasparrini used the term Ficus deliciosa, with the common name Fico Paradiso; he stated that it was the belief of growers that second-crop figs required caprification.

These are all Paradiso from this summer. It is a late ripening variety.

looks just like my white paradiso and Syrian long figs

I don't have more information. I don't even know if it's the same variety described by Condit as Paradiso and that some forum users have. Some information and photos i have seen seems different.

It states that the "Bronze paradiso" has the same specs as the ones on your figs. also the list of your nursery shoes another "Paraiso Branco".

And also a Paradiso distributed by Joe morle is from Genoa. (pictures there)

It seems there are at least a couple of different Paraiso varieties and i have still to confirm mine. 
The list that has the names Paraiso Branco and Paraíso is not from a nursery, but from a study that collected portuguese varieties in the south (and those two are listed there, although according to Francisco, it should be a Northern variety and not from Algarve).

I seriously doubt that Nelson's Paradiso came from the same nursery. I bought mine in a local nursery that, until know, has been totally accurate with their labeling.

There are similarities with Nelson's tree in the 3 lobed leaves, although i don't have better photos and i can't confirm that my tree had any 5 lobed ones (as i have said the tree struggled this year and lost most of it's leaves in the summer). The fig stalk seems longer in Nelson's figs.

Next year i will take more photos of the trees and figs to compare. Nevertheless, it's a very good fig.

Just to keep the information in the same thread, here's a few photos of Paraíso figs in September 2016.

The tendency to split is the same as last year because the skin of this fig is quite hard but the flavor is improving.
Much better than last year, quite sweet and complex flavor with hints of berry.

Jaime hi, This looks like an outstanding variey. In my place it grows fine too with the same unilobed leafs. Have two potted samples of it and now i am happy i did. I believe after all it is not similat to the paradiso in the forum which is with leafs that have 3 or more lobes.

BTW regarding the brown dots - i see it is a variety related- it had it last year too, now with interesting reddish stripes.
Here is a photo of young rooted paraiso, It has ficus sycamourus like leafs.

I feel like i won the jackpot today- adding a unique variety is hard thing to find.
