Pastiliere

Some fell,  some i touch and they fall right off.
So to date 7.13.12

Aborted -12
Martin   - 0

So... this is a very good variety as long as they stay on and ripen, but most of the time they fall off?

Martin,

You have a beautiful tree. Mine is much smaller but fruiting for the first time.
I have not noticed anything drop yet. I will keep my fingers crossed in hopes I have that one good strain.

Does yours drop all its' figs or just some? I mean from previous seasons?

Wow!, beautiful tree!
I loved the way you've landscaped, from what I can see in your pic,
it's nice, neat, and very functional.

It grows well for me in pot and last couple seasons seems to get a few more ripe ones and yes the ripened ones are very good there sweet like most figs and i get a mulberry note last season on my palate. I love mulberry's and so this i noticed right away but not from my other trees i can get that taste.
It hardens its limbs quite fast .

It aborts much of its crop but i never actually counted ripe versus aborted figs.
This season i will.
I got the plant as small starter in May 2009 its a UcDavis cultivar.

I have a UCD cutting, of this variety, started now.  It's just getting a few leaves, and the cup is showing many roots.  Hopefully, I'll have a good start of a tree next year.  They only sent one scion this spring, I guess it was in demand, so I'm happy to get one, and happy it rooted.

Hey Martin, STOP TOUCHING THEM ;0)

They might stay on. Sorry coulded help myself.

luke

Hey Martin, on planetfig.com they say Pastiliere drops because of temperature fluctuations and placing it close to a wall can help. Good luck.

High five Luke!

Yes Brent i read all that.  ; )
Last season it was in back of house right near wall.
Temp fluctuation cannot be helped here unless i put it in controlled environment which is out of question.

It gets the best of care like all my others and like Herman had mentioned in past it needs help from wasp.

But im hardheaded and give it a chance.
Just one year very soon i might just yank it out of pot and stuff in my 55g burn can if i do not see it improve.
Time will tell .

The French do have their own sense of humor. But I don't think they are joking about this.

Glad you are taking on the challenge, if it does not cut the mustard for you why not plant it out and see if the French were serious about its hardiness ;)

I asked about the skin of this one a while back and never caught a response Martin. Do the figs have an extra delicate nature compared to most? I ask because if they will not survive for 2 days in a quart container I can't sell them. Thanks.

When dead ripe no im my opinion would not last.
Here is some pictures from 2010 and 2011 you can decide.

Per Baud's web site, synonym for Pastiliere is Rouge de Bordeaux. Is your Pastiliere look like your Rouge dB?

It certainly looks delicious, but not sure I could stand to watch it drop so many figs. Good luck

Thanks Martin, I see what you are saying. They look so good though!

Pete,

That is very true. But for some odd reason I want to have them by both names. I have the Pastilliere but the Rouge DB is next.

Just like I have both Longue D'Aout and Melanzana Merdascola, they are the same.

Great pics, Martin. Thx!

Yes the figs are good thats the sad part.

Bullet in time i will know if there the same by the leaves and also the figs  each tree gives as i know Pastiliere taste just not Rouge which is still young and not yet bearing.

Nice Pic Martin , hopefully n keep praying that my Pastiliere could produce fruit normally some days.

Thanks

martin,

that is a beautiful figs. i hope i get the cuttings from UCD next spring.. can't wait to try some of the more desirable cuttings from UCD..

i FILL SORRY FOR THE FRUSTRATIONS AND STRESS THIS FIG WILL BRING YOU,IN THE LONG RUN.
i AM SO HAPPY i DISCARDED MINE TO CONCENTRATE ON FINDING BETTER CULTIVARS.

When I left the house last Tuesday mine were still holding on. I will be back this Friday or Saturday and check.
Maybe I have that special one? I hope!

Herman,

Stress and frustration are permanent part of my life. Bit of challenge won't bother me much. Beside, I have other trees giving me figs :)

Its beautiful figs fruit Martin but Mine is still falling of.
is there any special treatment for your Pastillere  to avoid fruits drop..?

Thanks
zaitun

Hi Zaitun
there is none that i know of. Its was mentioned a hormone spray was used on a Greek type of fig plant at Belleclare years ago to set main crop i think on a san pedro type plant but i'm not considering that.
