Pel de bou is not French language.
"Pel" is a Portuguese word .
"bou" doesn't mean anything . "Taureau" is ox .
Could it be "buro" ?

Just a wild guess on my part with the smattering of Latin/romance language that I know. Pellis meaning skin and bos meaning bovine. No skin off my rostrum.

I am familiar with a few Italian dialects , I imagine Portuguese and French also have dialects.
Pell de bou would translate to: skin of oxen in one of the Italian dialect. It sure looks like it !

Bou I believe is the Catalan word for Ox. Not sure about Pel. Pons also has a variety called Cuiro de Bou, leather of Ox.
