Wow! I had something similar happen on my panache. Unfortunately, while I was away, some unnamed relative decided it needed to be trimmed despite several warnings to not touch the trees. Said relative thought it would be a good idea to induce fruiting. Fortunately, I was already air layering the branch that supported it, but that air layer has none of the variegated leaves.
