Petals from the Past order

I just wanted to share my experience dealing with Petals from the Past. To say that I was satisfied would be a huge understatement. The trees came in in great shape and and the speed and quality were second to none. I only wished they had more varieties. Also the prices were excellent.

Ditto! Johnnie you should see the nursery! It's GINORMOUS....if there was a word! It is truly amazing! I visited the nursery last year and had an indepth talk with Blake about figs. It's the largest nursery I've ever seen.....around 200 acres....I think.

They really seem to have their act together. They kept me constantly informed of my order status and shipped really fast. I wish they all operated like this.

PFTP is the first nursery that I always recommend to my friends. Compared to some other 'famous' nurseries, the plants that they offer, has a much better rooting system and vigor. I have been pleased with their plants. Been to the nursery many times, always enjoyed discussing figs and other fruit trees with with Dr. powell and his son- Jason. In next year or so, they should have some new varieties of figs that were gifted to them from me.

Dennis, next time that you visit the nursery speak to Dr. powell or Jason. Both know a lot more about figs than Blake, especially Dr. Powell. He though me some of the pruning techniques that I did not know before. He is the world of knowledge in Pomology and its science.

Navid.

When did you place your order?

I placed my order over last weekend and got my trees on Thursday. To me that was very fast considering I am waiting a few weeks or more from some other nurseries.
Navid, I am glad to hear that you are helping PFTP grow their fig inventory. Certainly if they have what I am looking for they will definitly get my business.

The trees I have received from them are of good quality. They do have one problem as most other sellers that carry the variety O'rourke. They call it and improved celeste the same. This has been discussed several times on the forum. I have one I bought from them and it is the improved celeste not O'rourke.

Jake, I had read that on this forum and was aware going into the purchase but thanks for the heads up. I ordered one anyways as I have read that this strain produces excellent figs. In the end thats what it is all about to me. I gotta say for the price, this tree was impressive.

Limited fig varieties, but they cover most of the flavor groups (Sugar, Honey, Adriatic... etc.). Large healthy plants for a low price and shipped out weekly. Always a positive experience.

JohnnieB,
Between Work and Weather, not much has been accomplished. Hopefully I will be able to work outside this weekend and post a few pictures to update the progress of the fig orchard.
Thanks.

Very well put Pete. How are your projects going so far?

Anyone know if their Alma is the correct one? Thanks

Tim,
Yes, it was last year...

The plants that I've purchased from them have been slightly root bound. A simple bare rooting and re-potting has worked, with almost no delay in growth. The key is to bare root in a tub / bucket of water using the "water bath" method.
If the plant is root bound
1. Remove it from the pot, holding it at the soil line.
2. Dunk it root first into a 5 gallon bucket filled with water, and repeat (like dunking a tea bag).
3. Remove all the growing media (with the water in the water bath only).
4. Do not root prune if the plant is leafed out. Repot and place in shade for a few days.

This procedure usually removes all the potting mix with minimum damage of the roots.
Warning: Do not root prune, because it will initially slow the growth of the plants.

<Edit>
greenfig,
Their O'Rourke/Improved Celeste was a much better producer, The taste was similar, but they were very young plants. Haven't tried the Lemon, newly purchased this year, but a very aggressive grower.

Yes Tim, they have the real Alma. I think I'm gonna plant 4 more in my orchard. I just love the flavor and taste of Alma.

Thanks Pete & Dennis. I placed my order.

How different is Celeste from the Improved Celeste (O'Rourke) in taste and hardiness?
They sell both but I would like to order just one (to be grown in some hot California climate, if it matters)?

Another question.
They sell Lemon and White Marseilles. Since they have different entries, they seem like different figs but by description there and at this site, they seem more like very similar if not the same ones.

How different are they? How do you describe the taste?

Thanks Pete & Dennis. I also placed my order for 4 trees.

Greenfig, just do you know, Improved Celeste is different from O'Rourke.  There may be many different Improved Celestes.
