Peter's Honey

I had first fruits on Peter's Honey from Raintree Nursery. Frankly, for all the hype about PH, I was not impressed. It was sweet enough, and flavor was better than OK, but the skin was exceptionally thick, tough, and very, very chewy. I admit this is the first season for fruit, but it was still not impressive. There are numbered selections in the USDA / UC Davis collection that easily that good without the chewy skin. I have "unknowns" that look and taste similar and/or better.

I am not dissing Raintree, just wondering why this variety is one of the "holy grails" for so many people.

I'm not sure it measures up to its reputation either, but for me here with the few figs I have, its nice to have the brebas. The late main crop (just had one yesterday) is really very good, but not very figgy, very sweet yellow pulp and few seeds, much like honey. You are right about the skin..thick and often spotted.

I kept my Kadota and donated my Peter's Honey for the same reasons.

Well, at least I;m not crazy, or if I am, this doesn't prove it.
