PETER'S HONEY FIG....worth the effort?

Finally today I got a peter's Honey Fig tree from Sydney. According to Nick who I bought the tree from it is the sweetest fig anyone can test. I am already impressed with Italian honey fig , he reckons it is even sweeter than that. Any comments appreciated. What you things friend it is variety to be excited about or not. Thanks

I believe that most figs are great under the right conditions, heat, water and good soil....etc.   Great to Hear you got a Peters Honey Fig......I just bought a Peter's Honey and excited about the possibilities.  Hopefully the Mature Peter's will be better than my Kadota.

i agree with you Armando, Adelaide is preety hot place during summer and we don't get much rain during summer. So ideal condition for the figs to grow. One thing is bugging me is that I need to re pot that fig as it is in a very small pot. But should i go just go one or two pot size higher or put that in a half wine barrel of 150 liter. Any suggestion on that from the readers will be helpful. thanks.

No need to pot up to a half barrel if it is in a 200mm already. Should be good for another season at least where it is.

Be patient with it. My peters Honey is 3 years old and did not do much last year. I'll give it another 2 years.

+1 this.  I've heard it takes a few years to get REALLY good.  I only had one off my 1st year tree and it tasted pretty good already.  I wish I hadn't given away so many of them.  I had 9 to start with! lol

Get it in a bigger pot just get the mix right or the fruits will drop, i know the heat in south Austraila is bad but if grown Right should go good show some pic soon thanks.

Ahhhh Man! I thought this Topic read:

Haha well I'm in the 'wait & see' boat: a very generous member has given us a chance to try rooting both of those "Honey's" so we'll grow them side by side - Like a Champion Heavyweight Title Match - May the Best Fig Win!
WE win regardless!

Wow that one just flew into my brain, probably from some kiddy disney movie, stuck in my head :)

Dave around late February you may want to make some rounds to Home Depot, Lowes, OSH and local nurseries...they may have some good stuff, bare root trees....keep the receipt if it doesn't come out of dormancy and goes Kaput....LOL

Armando, do big box stores carry bare root figs when it's the season?
 (february you said?)

Give your tree the space you can afford and manage - this way they suffer less from lack or abundance of water.
An 80 liters barel would already be great with some fertilizer in the potting mix - I'm using compost 2/3 + 1/3 of my clay ground for the potting.
If it doesn't produce fruit for now, let it grow lots of stems so that in the future it has more possibilities to fruit for you.
Don't call me to move your new barrel around your place :) especially the 150 liters.

jdsfrace mate I know mate only if I have a forklift I should attempt to move those heavy buggers. So once I choose a spot no going back. in Adelaide our winter is not that bad, never goes under zero. so they are ok. I already bought two barrel other day. White adriatic and panache is going there, final. Thanks.

If the Winter does not go under 0*C why not grow in ground?.
Most fig trees resist -10 C,outside in ground without any protection.
It will be free ,to look for water and nutrients ,by itself, and will produce 5 times more fruits than in pot.
Will not depend on you for nothing, except thinning and forming the shape you want.

Aaron, yeah the bare root trees come out feb-march at Lowes etc. Plan on seeing you guys will load up my little Kia with some little trees...LOL

Herman I read that a Madiera is a slow grower, will it speed up in the ground...???

from what i've heard, mother tree at USDA/UCD is also very slow growing and small. Black Madeira that is...

Thanks Pete for the info,   Don't stay up to late...LOL   If you do, just call me anytime....we can talk about growing fig cuttings successfully...LOL

Herman ,
I love to grow all the variety in the ground. Unfortunately I don't have much space left for them, so half wine barrel is the next best thing for me. i already have a Italian honey fig, Conandria, Blue provence in the ground. I have only one spot left and I love to plant the Panache there. The dream is one day have a hobby farm where I can put all the variety in ground. One day.

You guys that's exactly my dream too...I have my eye on this empty lot on the hills , facing entirely to sunset, ideal for figs or grape vines or any fruit for that matter... but I have to graduate my school first and start working to make the big bucks for it. I have all my fruit trees still in 5-20 gallon buckets and I intend to keep them that way until I get a land. ;)
