Petite Negri

First Petite Negri of the season. Very sweet, a little figgy but very good at about an 8.

Looks very good, closed eye it looks like?

It is a closed eye and good thing with all the rain we have had. It's a very nice small fig.

That is very exciting to see. I have 4 I don't know if they're Petite Negri or Petite Aubique and I won't get fruit until next year and that may be optimistic.

Tami, this is a three year old tree and this is the first figs.

That is so exciting. Congrats my friend.

Congrats Mike.  Mine is a 2 year old (got it from EL)... no figs yet, maybe next year.  Overall a rather slow grower for me in this climate.  I promised cuttings to a few folks once it gets any size to it.

I also have a couple of Aubique Petit, one of which was from Logees and labelled "Petit Negra" (but it seems to really be Aubique Petit).  The largest of my Aubique Petit trees is from another source, and made nice main crop figs last year (and has a bunch this year, will see if the season lasts long enough for them to ripen).

Again congrats.  You've probably already said in another thread where you got your Petit Negri, but I just can't remember.  Did you get it from EL or somewhere else?

Mike, mine came from EL also but it was was good size already. I said above that this was the first time to fruit but I remembered after I posted it
that it actually had two figs on it late last year. I brought it inside to ripen under T5  lights and they were no good. My tree is about four feet tall and
it is in bush form with three main trunks.

How does it taste compared to Hardy Chicago or Sal's.

I would say better than HC and equal to Sals. That being said, everyones taster is different. LOL

Is there a difference from petite negri and petite negra? I also have one from logees that was labeled petite negra, I hope when it starts to fruit that they turn out as nice as yours.

Ryan, they are different. http://www.logees.com/Fig-Petite-Negra-Ficus-carica/productinfo/R1710-4/

Fig ‘Petite Negra’ (Ficus carica)
‘Petite Negra’ is an amazing fruiting fig that produces medium sized plump black juicy figs at a young age. This impressive fig is perfect for the indoor or patio gardener since it starts fruiting when plants are less than 12” tall. ‘Petite Negra’ is an ornamental beauty as well since the mitten-shaped green leaves make a lovely backdrop for the ripening deep purple fruit. Grow in full sun on a windowsill or outside in warm temperatures. If growing conditions are kept warm, it will hold its foliage year-round. Under cool temperatures, the plant will drop its leaves and go dormant until temperatures warm up. - See more at: http://www.logees.com/Fig-Petite-Negra-Ficus-carica/productinfo/R1710-4/#sthash.NprXAmi1.dpuf

Thanks mike, I probably should have ordered it from rain tree but logees had theirs on sale for $14, I guess I wait and see if taking the bargain route was worth it.

Quackmaster, I believe those trees that Logees sells as "Petit Negra" are really Aubique Petite.  Herman2 (Vasile) knows a lot about this history, and has told in other threads about how a couple of nurseries in the past were selling Aubique Petite mis-identified as Petit Negra  (which naturally then was perpetuated).  In any case, the Logees "Petit Negra" is still a pretty nice fig, whatever name you call it.  But according to Herman2, it's a case of misnaming that goes back many years.

Ok, thanks, I'll wait and see, hopefully its worth the wait

Mike, I am thinking of purchasing a Petite Negri from Edible Landscaping for the purpose of grafting fast growing varieties onto it i.e. the PN would be rootstock (see Axier's recent thread).  I think I read that you find PN to grow as a compact bush but is still quite productive - is that correct?  Also, does it have outwards signs of FMV?  It looks like the main crop ripens relatively early for you so that could be a plus too.  Thanks.

EL is where mine came from also. Yes it is fairly compact bush type. It is productive and a very tasty fig. It does show some sypmtoms
of FMV.

I followed the link to find out the difference between Petite Negra/Petite Negri or if they are different at all. THEN, I have Violette De Bordeaux from EL that has a printed picture with information and tagged "Negronne". So now my next Question is, is Violette De Bordeaux related to Negronne that is also MAY BE also known as Petite Negri????

...confused,  @*_*@

Anybody enlighten me
k

I've asked that same question before, I was told they were very close if not the same,  I bought a vdb from a nursery here in La which was labeled negronne and seems to be the same as the petite aubique I got from Rafed last summer.  Then I rooted a few vdb cuttings from a couple different sources that are the same, but a little different the the first vdb i bought.......whew, that's confusing, lol
