Petite Negri (pics)

When I got home today I found a surprise on my fig. A drop of honey. It was thick and sweet.
Less sun inside the house but the constant heat does'em good.

Looks good Sammy. That PN you gave me grew just a little but put out about 16 figs (many of them double figs - from same node). One has ripened for me. The others have struggled with this cold weather.

Good luck with that DK this winter! I am going to try some myself outdoors next year.

Tyler

Congratulations, You must have the touch to be able to grow those nice figs in Zone 4!

Thanks guys.
The DK will be bent over and covered with soil and snow for the winter. About 5 feet away from the DK there is a Latarulla that will undergo the same test. Both are 2 years old now.

Looks good Sam, congrats.

Good to see your ripe breba. Breba on my plants, in Zone 5a, were very late this year, mostly ripened in August. Do you get ripe main crop in Calgary?
Tonite is first frost here (32F/ 0C) that dampens hope for the main crop. Only Florea ripened some fruit.

DK covered outside in Zone 4 is a bold try !
Please post next summer if embryos survive and you get ripe fruit. It will be a happy surprise.
I feel I will part ways with my DKs if results were not good next summer. I am no more comfortable with breba-only fig plants. I just don't get them branch-pruned at the right time.

Covering with soil sounds promising.  What is the last freeze date?
Reason I ask is that the ground won't be warm enough for the fig to grow before that.  Figs are like tomatoes as far as wanting the soil to warm up before they wake up and start growing.

This year I put a temporary greenhouse around some in-ground figs for May and June to give them an early start.  It did seem to work since I harvested Stella and some other figs last week.  That was the earliest for Stella that I have had.  My other in-ground figs are just starting now a week later.

Ottawan. The only ripe main crop I got so far is if I bring my potted plants inside. My plants are still young and putting on new figs too late.
I have a back-up Dk in a pot so I might as well test the other one outside. It might work if I can cover it with enough snow in time to prevent the frost from going  into the ground.

Pino. My last freeze date is the long weekend in May. I hear what you are saying and want to get some early ripening figs to try in-ground.
A greenhouse would be nice to start early for sure.

I burried a first year Natalina in my flower bed last fall and it survived the winter and I exposed it on the long weekend in may but the fig on it is still in the waiting to swell period.  It's been a very cool summer here too.

Tyler. 16 figs. That's pretty good!

Yeah here it is Sammy back at the end of August. I should have thinned out the figs but just couldn't bring myself to do it lol.

Tyler. Your tree is telling you "keep me, keep me".

Here is a picture of the inside of the breba in the first photo.
It was mild flavoured and juicy.
