PH problem

I have recently planted all of my trees in pots using a mixture of ultra light top soil, perlite, sand and some pine bark nuggets. I also mixed in about 2 handfuls of lime and used the recommended amount of oscolmote fertilizer. Today I tested the ph and they are all reading 7 some almost 8. Should I mix in some sulfur, or just leave it?

What kind of lime?  You may be able to just rinse it out.

I used pellitized dolomite.

Paul13, Are you measuring pH with a good quality pH meter using the pour through method? It is easy to get an incorrect reading with garden pH devices and/or poor techniques.

There are no good publications that I can find testing optimum pH ranges for fig trees. I have seen reports of productive, in-ground orchards growing in pH 7 & 8 soil. I personally shoot for a pH of 6 to 6.5 for my figs in pots. I have had a number of pots end up around pH 7 without any obvious negative effects. My impression is that figs are tolerant of a fairly broad pH range but do not have data to rigorously support that impression.

Dolomitic lime usually raises pH over a period of weeks. So you need to monitor the pH of your media over time. You might remix the media without lime and retest the pH.

As to your present situation, I would just leave the trees in the present media and monitor the pH weekly to see if the pH rises.

Good luck with your pots!

Here's a better question. How do the plants look? Do they look happy? If so, don't mess with success.  If they are looking like they are struggling, then I would look into making changes or mediating the problem.

I agree that you should be patient as long as your plant looks healthy. I sent a soil test in to the university for an area I plan planting a fig orchard on. They recommended a target pH of 5.5-6. I think I will shoot for a little over 6. I know that figs are tolerant of acidic soils because our soils in Georgia tend to be anywhere from pH 5-5.5 and figs grow fine without liming.

Thanks for all the replies . I may have been using it wrong like DWD 2 said, I didn't wet the area of soil where I inserted the meter. I will have to give it a try again tomorrow. As for the plants they look okay for the time being.
