Pretty good fig. Productive. In ground tree with no winter protection

Looks good, I hope it taste good, I have one and all I care about is growing habits and taste. Thanks for the nice photos.

So far this year Salem Dark was the best of my figs.  Most were no-shows to the contest

Salem Dark was 2nd behind Malta Black here.  The fig (I only left two on the tree and one has not ripened) was about half the size of Paully's.

Had a first fig a week or so ago. Definitely a keeper.

Salem Dark is a great fig.  I have 2 potted trees and may put one in the ground next June.

Do these have 2 crops?

A very nice looking fig! Thanks for posting.

I’ve got a question, is the Salem Dark a Mt Etna fig?
How does it compare in taste and size with a MBVS and Chicago Hardy?

In my opinion, it is a mt etna fig.  Compared to MBVS, it is very similar.

Salem dark (I named after my uncle Salem) is very vigorous and productive in our area. In some years it may put a light crop of breba, but I haven't observed it. Some one compared it to a fig I also offered under the name Macool, there is a big possibilities they might be the same variety, since they're both from the same village in Syria.

Bass, I will agree.  It is very similar to Macool.  Both ripen around the same time.   Which is now in my climate.  SD is very prolific.  Paully, nice job!  Your tree looks very healthy.

Thank you , Frank.
So, MBVS = Salem Dark = Macool as Mt Etna figs .
They all used to be on my wish list, good thing I decided to wait a little after I got a MBVS.
This random fig naming still drives me crazy ...

You hit the nail on the head greenfig!

My 2 cents for what's worth now that I am growing in ground quite a few mt. etnas.  I find that some ripen a little too late, some produce very few brebas, some seem to have FMV symptoms... But overall they are all good figs but very similar.

The key is to find the one or two that grow well in your area and are disease free.

That's just my opinion, Igor.  There are so many varieties that taste so similar.  As I evaluate more of my collection, I'll be removing several that have similar flavor profiles, as it doesn't make sense to have redundancy.  As Pino just said, keep the healthiest and best performing.
Now of course there are some varieties that taste so good, despite lacking performance and health, you just have to keep them.  ;)

Frank,
No problem, I was just surprised to notice a strong resemblance.
I myself have 4 Mt Etna figs that came under different names but taste and look 95% the same, some will have to go to give room to others.
My list of Etna figs has more than 10 varieties, some of them command the premium prices that I don't think they should.
Those are all really fine figs and I believe everyone should have at least one!
My MBVS is a superb tree.

100% agree, Igor.
