Pinched but no fruit

I pinched my fig trees back about two weeks ago but only new leaves and no fruit. Any idea what I can do to make it push fruit. Seven trees and no figs. The foliage is abundant and lush but I would rather have figs. Any suggestions.

Thank you forum friends.

Swizzle, I feel your pain.
Vasile (Herman2) said something recently that gave me an epiphany.
He used the term "bolting" to describe fruiting.
Bolting...it makes perfect sense.
When you plant lettuce in your garden, you don't want really hot weather, because the plants will bolt. You want vegetative growth from them.

Figs are modified flowers.
I'm beginning to wrap my mind around the fact that a fig tree will only bolt when its internal clock is triggered by temperature and length of day.
It seems all the pinching I do has no effect on some varieties, while on others, it stimulates the plants to grow figlets within weeks.
Sal's, St. Anthony, Marseilles Black...foggedaboudit :)
Marylane Seedless, Brown Turkey, Abebereira...forget about it :(

Reading the reaction of a plant to pinching might reveal a lot about its timing and earliness.

What varieties are you pinching without success?

Yes , what variety are we talking about and how old is the plants?

We'll I have seven trees, two of Frank's Carini Figs, 1 Early Violet, three black unknowns, one of which is in ground, and one unknown Italian black. Only the in-ground tree is older than two years old. Three trees are last year's cuttings or air layers and three trees are this years cuttings or air layers. Last year the black unknown had a dozen figs on it at this time. I planted it in the ground this year and will protect it through the winter. It has grown well since being planted but it is like the rest of my plants, no figs. It's frustrating.

Tell us more about your trees and where you're located. Trees in pots or in ground? How has your weather been? Cool? Rainy? Hot, humid? I think you need a bit more patience since only two weeks have passed since you pinched. I pinched all of my trees this year as well and have noticed a big increase in figlets being produced. Did u stop your fertilizer? Tell us more and include some pix. Someone can help, I'm sure.

Figs too vigorous from over watering or too much nitrogen grow like crazy but don't fruit much. Also first yr plants from cuttings may be less likely to fruit. Those are often too vigorous as well. Get them to settle down with shorter internodes and the likelyhood of fruiting goes up.

I'm with Steve, I was thinking too much nitrogen. If a young fig grows too fast it will not fruit. It may be too late to do much this year, but next year only fertilize two times; once before bud break and then about one month later. That will be enough food for vegetative growth but allow the tree to focus it's energy on fruiting.

I fertilize once a month with a liquid 10,10, 10 fertilizer. All of the figs are in pots except one that is in ground. I did put granulated lime on them in early June . Weather has been warm with rain once a week. I have been watering if the heat has been high for a few days in a row otherwise I have left them to Mother Nature. By high I am talking mid to upper 80s.

i've started treating figs like flowers. when i wanted figs i switched from 10-10-10 to  jacks blossom booster. low N, high P n K.
this gave me a bunch of  little figs..
either this worked or the figswere ready to form anyway.

you might try this. it fits with what steve n gene said.

Susieqz you were right. I got some Jacks houseplant fertilizer. It is 15-30-15 and two days after I used it I now have figs. That is why I love this forum. No matter what the problem, when it comes to figs, someone here has usually gone through it already. Thank you all for your help.

i'm glad it worked for you. i've been using jacks way back when it was called peters.
i prefer a complete fertilizer with all the micro nutrients.

most members like MG but i think it's not as good.

Swizzle, I posted a very similar question a day after you did - for some reason I missed this thread until now.  Here's my thread:

Anyway, you got a lot more useful ideas than I did.  I also pinched without success so far.  But in both cases where I'm not getting fruit I planted them in the ground this Spring and they have both taken off with a lot of growth.  I haven't fertilized either of them but the soil they are in is pretty good soil.  I'll definitely try the Jack's Blossum Booster and see what happens.
