Pine bark fine substitute

Hello, are cedar or cypress bark fines a safe alternative to pine fines? I contacted the maker of earth gro decorative ground cover bark and they said it could be pine, fir, cedar, or cypress depending on where it's made.

Thanks!
Paul

Earth gro is fine as long as they haven't added color to it.On the west coast I suspect most of it's
going to be Douglas fir.I've been running it through my pots for 4 years with no ill effect.

Thanks tyro. Will the bag specify color added if that's the case?

It should, usually it'll say something like "color enhanced".I think those are usually red or black.

They have brown enhanced as well.

Talking to a nursery owner, the cedar mulch will not be sufficient, the pine bark fines have been aged and composted and will retain moisture where the cedar mulch hasn't been aged, it will retain moisture but it will also produce mushrooms and start breaking down in the pot.
