Lowes in Austin (Brodie Ln. to Austinites) has bags of Pine Bark Mulch in 3 different sizes.

HappiGro Pine Bark Mulch--largest size, I still use it in smaller quantities for added drainage.

HappiGro Landscapers Mix--what most people are looking for in size, 1/8"-1/2", known as pine bark fines.

HappiGro Compost--This is still pretty porus, very fine pine bark mulch, not what I would call compost.
(My composted chicken, goat, hay looks like dirt.)

BTW they had 10 dollar 4'-5' Kadota, LSU Purple, Celeste, and of course BT in 1 gallon containers.

I have found my best value for money (1/2" grade) Pine Bark Mulch from local Agway stores.

George - do you sift out too large or too small particles from that Agway Pine Bark Mulch?  If so, how much of the bag is 'wasted' (used as mulch elsewhere)

Agway has a similar product called mini Pine Bark Nuggets that look like they are a little large

     I have been using the Agway pine bark mulch(unsifted) for the last two seasons, and I find out it's just right as a potting mix(with Miracle Grow potting soil...50/50 ratio)......or if I'm just introducing newly rooted cuttings to their first taste of soil mix then I use ProMix BX with Agway pine bark mulch(also 50/50 and unsifted)....there are a lot of different combinations of materials for good potting mix...I just stumbled upon this one by trial and error....good luck with your choice.

I use agway pine bark mulch mixed with course perelite and a pete based soil mix for most of my containers. I add some turface for plants in smaller pots for a little more moisture retention. If you decide to sift with a half inch screen you can always use the larger pieces for a top dressing. The nuggets run a little large for me. Peace, chad
