Pino's Brebas 2017

Last few years have photographed and posted my brebas/fioroni and main crop figs.
Serves to keep track of the figs I grow and helps resolve fig names.  Hopefully it adds to peoples ideas in what figs can be grown and ripened in Zone 6.

2017 in Niagara has been cool and wet not the usual hot and dry summers.
Interestingly it has benefited many figs to produce many brebas and larger than normal figs.

For convenience I set up a photo log on Houzz for easy viewing and allows feedback.

Picked these figs during rain yesterday.  All a nice size and resisted splitting.  They all had a nice sweet and figgy taste and juicy but nice.

Comments, questions and feedback welcome!

Added Vine Greek fig picked yesterday to log.

They all look great. That dottato stands out with its colors and pattern. Are all of these in ground?

Thanks Jeff!

The dottato U. has impressed me with 7 huge brebas on a small tree and last year it was loaded with huge main crop figs. I planted Dottato U. in ground this year.  If nothing else it will fill up great looking fig baskets very fast for selling.

At this time 1/2 my fig trees are in ground and 1/2 in containers.  Going forward I plan on only a few figs staying in containers.  The late ripening ones (if I keep them) and the figs strictly for breba production.

Picked this Capelas Azores yesterday after the rain storm.  Weighed 128 grams and tasted as good as it looks.
Very sweet honey taste, juicy with little seed crunch.

Just a dozen or so in ground Desert King brebas and a few Dan's Greek and Atreano left.   Luckily I picked my first main crop yesterday:)

Great looking figs. The Vine Greek looks very nice shaped and the Yugo Black Huge is definitely super sized... Congrats!

The end of breba season on my fig orchard in Niagara has arrived.
Luckily I have 2 main crop figs that ripened ushering in the 2017 main crop!
Here are a few photos of the last brebas.

Great time to close off this topic while enjoying the remaining main crop figs as they ripen.

Best 2017 brebas

- largest breba; Dan's Greek and Yugoslavian Black Huge were the biggest figs 165 grams

- best producing; Dottato Unk, tied for 2nd;  Greek Vine fig, fico bianco, Neveralla, melanzanas both the round and long one
- also notable mention for the many brebas produced by Deanna, White Spanish (296), Peter's Honey, Capelas, Desert King, Sicilian Black JR, Goutte d'Or and Atreano.

All in all a good summer for brebas in Niagara.
Seems to me breba production benefits from wet cool summers.   Maybe that's the reason why many in the PNW like to grow breba producing figs.

Comments suggestion welcome
happy figging

Pino the best tasting UNK you show in you first picture is similar to Dattero I have from Vivaio Belfiore near Florence, Dattero translates to Date , you should be able to find it on his site.
I'll try to post picture
