PIX: just found out why i'm getting sudden increase in gnat.

one of my carrion plant is getting ready to bloom. pix to follow later, if it blooms.

just added this.. noticed the nifty watermark.. they didn't have my preferred font any more... hope the darn flower doesn't drop off.

Fungus gnats seemed to explode in numbers when I started using soybean meal on potted figs in the greenhouse. No more of that stuff for mine.

and...back by popular demand (not really), future pix will have watermarks :)

so are you saying the blooming of your carrion plant is causing an increase in gnats??  Or did you start a topic but then write about something else?? ;)

i think the gnats are attracted to carrion plant flowers. last few days i noticed them and they are not from humidity bin. no idea where they are coming from, but now i know why they are coming.

Might be useful to use the flowers as a bait and put up some sticky traps near the flowers.  Maybe you could patent the idea or some version of it. :)

the idea was to bait them with carrion flower and use CP to control them. CP all died due to not watering them :) so now i only have gnat magnets.

Haven't seen the first gnat this year. The last two years I used Gnatrol every time I used water and got good results. The difference this year: Started cuttings later, first sign of roots they went into 50/50 UPM and perlite and went outside uncovered if no leaves, covered with a clear cup if leafing out. If temperature was forecast for 40 degrees or below they came inside for the night. Probably got 90% or better sucess on about 90 cuttings. Just started 130 more and will do the same. I am sure there has been gnats around the plants I did not see. I believe as they hatch the wind takes them away being outside. No more winter time rooting for me.

since i like the watermark so much.. here it is once again. x)

I'm with you on that Jake!!!! No more winter rooting here either. Too much work and very stressful!

Also, wanted to let you know ALL the plants you sent in the fall are doing super and are, as of yesterday, in 3 gallon bags to keep growing roots. They're beautiful and healthy. You're such a great guy!

that's what i said last winter :) keep the number small... less juggling.

Unless I somehow end up with an awesome set up in my garage, it's just not gonna happen. They can sleep in the fridge till spring!

Your are too funny.  I could see you growing Bulbophyllum orchids.  Things like Zombie Breath which attract carrion flies by the thousands.  A friend of mine grows these things and shows them.  He was in Washington DC in a show at a nice hotel and his plant drew flies like crazy.  The judges pulled it for a culture award then disqualified it for bugs.  At that point it was covered with flies.
