PIX: Kathleen's Black

as name implies, it's black fig. i mean.. it's black. it has that nice crack on the skin. looks very appearing.

i could have used a day or two more, but it was ripe enough to be very enjoyable. the taste is generally sweet, and have certain something. but not the taste of other fruits. it's not exactly honey.. not sure what it is. but it's good. the fig has improved a lot from last yr. i'm sure it will be even better next yr.

nice seed crunch all around.

Nice to hear it has improved.  I remember you questioning it in the past.  I have 2 that are very small but I'm willing to wait them out and see how they taste.

nice looking, pete. may i ask how old the trees is? how long do they keep improving?

DVery nice pete. Sad my one cutting didn't make it but there is always trading season around the corner.
Love the way you pose your figs in the pics. Looking forward to seeing more.

pete, sorry to have bothered you. i just found your other thread that answered my question.

susie, the tree is 4 yrs old, but it's been giving me figs for only last two yrs. that was after pinching. it's a good fig, but it's not exactly highly productive like VdB, it's middle of the road as far as production is concerned. it gives good number of breba compare to my other trees. i had few more since the pix. some were better than the others.

from what i see from my other figs, the full potential of the fig won't be there for about 4th yr that tree has been putting on the figs. i'll have to give it more time.

thanks, pete. i'm just confused about when figs mature. this helps.

Yes it does have that certain something in taste. I'm glad that you also can't find a flavor to compare this fig to, it just has it's own unique taste.

Pete,

Thanks for the photos.  Two or three years still left to go for my, now, two year old, bratty, "KB".

Frank,
and I'm still waiting.

EDIT :
I just tasted two perfectly ripened, "Bensonhurst Purple"/"Hardy Chicago" figs.  If Gene Hosey said you'd feed "HC" to the pigs after tasting a "Kathleen's Black", then this "KB" must be a variety that's worth the wait.  "Bensonhurst Purple"-"HC" was one of the best tasting figs I ever had.

whiie checking the trees for rain damage this morning, found one that was dropped and laying on the deck.. wow.. not "wow", but wow.. it was sweet. i mean, but sickly sweet and in over powering sweet, but sweet as in "just right". still no other flavor. maybe it's just that type of fig. but it's not just simply sweet. there is something more to it.. but not sure how to put it. good fig.
