PIX: Paradiso Gene breba

After treating the tree with the Tabasco sauce, I finally managed to taste the figs!
The smaller one is dead ripe, the larger fig could be a bit better tomorrow. Both were very good.
Taste wise, the Paradiso was exactly the same as the Strawberry Verte, the color and size is also the same. The differences I see are the leaf shape and that the Paradiso is less productive (by a lot). So it is almost I see no reason to keep both. They both are excellent figs but identical for my taste.

Very nice, I'm starting to get jealous.

Igor,

I have a few questions to get a general sense of the relative 'effectiveness' of the Tabasco sauce treatment:

  • How many figs were present when you 'treated' the tree?
  • How many figs did you lose (if any) after the application of the sauce?
  • Were there any side effects (residues) to the tree (growth) or the fruit (flavor)?

JD:

  • How many figs were present when you 'treated' the tree? -> on this tree, 7 total and 3 were getting ripe any day. They eat 1 fig 2 days in a row (twice) before the treatment.
  • How many figs did you lose (if any) after the application of the sauce? -> none
  • Were there any side effects (residues) to the tree (growth) or the fruit (flavor)? -> I have not noticed any. The sauce is heavily diluted, I used 1 tsp per my spray bottle which is probably 1 quart. During the spraying I could smell the sauce, it might be better to do with a mask on, but 2 min after the smell is gone and you definitely cannot smell it the next day. It could be an overkill, but I sprayed every night since I really wanted to taste the figs.
As a note, I sprayed lightly not the fig only but the area around the tree as well including a few leaves. The fig(fruit/flower) was covered with a mesh bag and that what was sprayed, not the fig itself.

I got both Paradiso and Strawberry Verte from Jon. I also thought the fruits were very similar, maybe Paradiso bigger and more spoilage. I didn't see much difference in yield. Now have Bronze Paradiso so will see how that compares.

I got 6 months harvest off SV in my greenhouse, June 11 to Dec 11. Even the breba are good. It's a fast grower, great flavor, and highly productive.

Fignutty,
I agree with you on the spoilage of Paradiso and productivity of SV, that is why I am leaning towards leaving only the SV.
My both the Paradiso and SV are of the same age and were obtained from Jon at the same time.

Nice looking figs, Igor.  What other gems have you got stashed in your garden?  Well, if you don't see any reason to keep one...I know where you could  send it ;)

I only got rid of Paradiso because it came with RKN and I wasn't into rooting at that time. Otherwise I wish I still had it. You might want to try another potting if that's how you are growing them. There aren't many flies on Paradiso and mine did produce, if my memory serves me correctly.

Do you let your SV shrivel up on the bush? I like mine shriveled and ugly looking. They're really sweet and flavorful that way.

Nate,
Lets talk in the Fall :)

Steve,
My Paradiso is surprisingly clan, I do not even see the FMV. This year my SV is not ready to eat yet, but last year I tried to wait as long as I could . The figs were not shriveled, they were very sweet even without waiting that long.

The reason I am talking to keep or not to keep the Patadiso is because of the space constrains. I would like to have a large fig diversity and those two look similar to me.
As I mentioned, Paradiso is a great tasting fig.

I am with you Igor, if their is a similar variety, and you have constraints on space, its best to keep the better one and trade the other off.

Igor thanks for posting this.... this kind of information is beneficial for those of us with this crazy fig disease lol..... now I can say to myself..... I don't need to acquire PG because my SV will be better lol...
