PIX: USDA/UCD Ischia Black so far.

it's growing better than i thought. not very tall, but the leaves aren't all that bad at all. there is a branch that has different shaped leaves below. but it seems, from last yr and this spring, these ones seems to be dominant leaf shape.

Pete my experience some grow well then later in season they can look much worse .
Then some look bad from the get go.

As a note as plant matures and continues to grow those leaves will not be dominant
i have seen from Hermans pictures and starting on our plant last season.

Looks like a great start, hope it keeps growing well for you.

martin,

it's only 2 yrs old. will see how it goes for the rest of this season and so on.

Good luck with your plant and look forward to more pictures this season as it grows.

Good job Pete.  Let us know how it does and how the fruit tastes.

Great job, Pete! I hope it grows well for you.

thanks folks. i'm hoping some of the USDA/UCD varieties will grow well enough here i can share them with others.

Pete here are my 2 Black Ischias from UCD. These 2 trees I grew from 2 cuttings. Not bad to get 100% success from a Black Ischia cutting! These 2 trees are 3yrs old. They will double in size this year using my liquid fertilizer. I got 4 wonderful tasting figs from them last year. Definately a keeper.

so, how long before IB matures? it seems like the "thumb" only shows after it matures.

Dennis have you thought about pinching those to facilitate branching? Just curious.

Not sure i do know Herman's is at least 8 years old mine is not mature .

thanks Brian!  I will after repotting it this weekend.

i don't pinch for branching until the main trunk is at the height i want.. at least 2'. or at least that's what i do with fast growing ones like CdD.

martin,

8 yrs is long time to wait.. there were couple of figs last yr, but they didn't ripen. i'm hoping to at least taste some this yr.

I meant not mature for the figs .  ; )
Example had several ripe figs last season off 2 season old plant but it does not show
but a leaf or 2 with the thumbs .

Looking at Hermans it seems those will eventually be the dominant leaf .
