[panachee]

Awesome Pete!

Very nice!!

Have you tried panachee figs yet Pete? Was wondering about your assessment of them.

i haven't had it before. i kept putting off getting Panachee thinking it's just a eye candy. but the praise for this cultivar was so great i decided to give it a try. the tree is going into 2nd yr, so i'm not expecting too much. maybe it will be a wow fig, maybe not.

It's a EXCELLENT fig but need a lot of summer heat to ripen. It's one of my favorites. The berry taste just explodes in your mouth.

Thanks Pete. That's really how I had looked at Panachee also.

Sue thanks for chiming in!  Love the "explosion" of berries description !

Panachee cuttings were one of most vigorous growers for me.

Thanks for the pic Pete, lovely plant.

I find panache to be hard to root but the flavor is incredible.  It can split in humidity or rain so this year I'm covering my figs in an organza bag and a cup.  Since the ones that split were in organza no bugs got to them and they still tasted great.

Yes. It does well out here. I've eaten some from a friend's mature trees. Compared to other varieties, in pots, it does tend to be a slow grower however.

I echo what Sue said! They have a crazy amazing berry taste! Pete, in my zone, it is not that hardy. It will dieback depending on the winter you have. I have 5 of them. Three are 5' tall. It does need a lot of heat to ripen. Last year, mine spoiled due to the very wet summer we had. This year? I'm moving mine to my greenhouse. At UCD, their Panachee is over 10' tall. You have to use a ladder to reach them but worth the wait.

Good looking plant you got there, Pete.  Definitely some eye candy. Can't wait to see them stripes!

Nate

dennis, i'm hoping the weather here will be nicer this yr. so far so good!

nate, yupe. eye candy.. i'm sure you have more of eye candies on the beaches of the paradise. lol

Unfortunately, I was in the woods this past weekend hunting.  So, the only eye candy I seen was at 200-300 yards through the scope of my rifle ;).  Good news, though.  Fresh meat in the freezer.

Nate

what do you guys hunt in the paradise?

betcha it's wild boar!

Lol! On Oahu, wild boar.  On Lana'i, axis deer.  Oh, btw I didn't see one fig tree on the entire island.  Well, the population on Lana'i is only 3000.  Pretty laid back, country style.  No 7-11, no McDonalds, and no stoplights.  I did bring back a bay leaf cutting and a gardenia cutting with HUGE flowers.

Nate

no mickey d? how do they survive? J/K!!!

I dunno though.  The one gas station on the island was charging $5.27/gallon and a gallon of milk was almost $12!  I don't know how the natives do it!
