Planning a fig growers meeting

For those of you that live in the vicinity of the tri state area, pa, NJ, Ny, I'm planning a get together and talk about figs.
Let me know what you think of this plan.
I have spoke with Bill from NJ and he's willing to do a demonstration on how he grows his figs in containers, he has a nice collection of figs grown in a self watering container.
We can either meet at my place in Bethlehem, pa or meet at Bill's place in Flemington, NJ. Bill has a nice set up in his barn for doing a presentation, and we can see his fig collection. He can accommodate up to 60 people.
You are also welcome to my house, I can accommodate up to 20-25 people, and have a backyard packed with other fruit trees besides figs, I can demonstrate grafting fruit trees if you like. My place may be far for some of you.
Besides demos we can bring our extra trees and either sell or trade with others.
Tentative date April/May
possible day a saturday or a sunday afternoon.

Suggestions?

From Montreal both options are the same ( 8 hours of driving for both places)

I like the idea of middle of April or May

Bass, sounds great.  Count me in for sure

Pete

I cant do May, but I can do April.

Wouldn't May be better since fig trees would have more growth?  I mean the ones people would be bringing to trade.  Also isn't May better for grafting than April?

BTW, please do not plan around me.

Count me in, work schedule permitting.

Like I mentioned on the other thread I'll be meeting up with another fig lover (Evesgarden) to trade figs near Buffalo, NY for a late summer trade session. It looks like jenia will be coming and maybe more. As of today the date has been set......

Sat. Aug. 14th (11am - 1pm)... Times uncertain/may run longer @ the Erie County Fair Grounds south Parking lot.

This will be happening during the fair. You can get into the lot for free just ask me how. If anyone is interested just contact me and I'll add you to the list. Plan on bringing your extra plants to trade. This will be fun!

Thanks,
Little John

Wild, your killing me. I just got back from 3 days in Buffalo and 2 days in Syracuse!

Sounds like the makings of a regular swap meet about to be born. I wish I lived in the area, I'd be saying count me in too. A few hundred miles between us makes it kinda out of the question for me though.

I guess we gotta get Rafed to shuttle some of our plants around!

Hmm, Saxon, not sure it does. Ill be traveling from the southwest. For those of you who think Im rich, Im not. I have a free ticket from SW Airlines!

Question is Jose, do you have ANOTHER free ticket :-)))?

April is fine by me... Grafting around this time is no problem.
what month is better for most of us May or April?
What location do you guys prefer? center Jersey or Eastern Pennsylvania?
Also I would love to invite Jon over. We can raise money for his ticket by auctioning of donated fig trees.
Would do you guys think?

Hey Bass count me in. your place is fine I'll be there
   Paul

Anywhere.  Any time.  Just send me the details and I am there.  If anyone from further north isn't up for a 6+ hour drive, I can transport 3 from the Catskills south if you want to carpool.  Just don't bring (or buy/trade) too many plants.

What about food?  It is going to be a long day for most of us.  Can we get Bass or Bill to let us poach the barbie if we bring charcoal and food?  And beverages?

C.J.

I would like that alot

I just need to find another nut to go along
Its about 6 hours for me But I think it would be a fantastic
opportunity to learn and meet other fignuts

Appox 3 years ago, I was involved in such a meet for about
4-6 NE fig people. It never materialized. You guys/gals work
out the details, and most likely I will do show up
(when/where you decide).

Bass's mention of the show in PA seems a good place.
At least it does a fix the time part...

Count me in if you are keeping a list of early responders.
I am new to the growing of fig's and eager to learn.
Sometimes we learn the hard way. I checked on my cuttings i placed in a small refrigerator in my garage, only to find that it froze, all my cutting in zip lock bags wrapped in damp paper were frozen solid. I thawed them in cold water and now waiting to see if they will root. I am hoping that the ice would act like insulation as in fruit protection in the south.

Bass,

I like the idea of a plant auction to raise money for Jon's ticket.  Bass, can you be the central point for that?  How would you handle that?  Auction under your name and then everyone ships the plants from their own location?

Out of what airport would he be flying?  San Diego?  Just checked the fares for San Diego/JFK  - Friday Departure/Monday return and it is currently $354.  Have no idea what kind of itinerary he would prefer so it was just a stab in the dark.

Then there is the question of accommodations.  How many NY area people are going to be fighting over who gets to put him up. <g>  We could raffle him off!

Details, details, details.

C.J.

Well if Jon shows I hope it doesn't turn out like the  Apalachin Meeting in NY where the fig bosses of bosses got raided.

Sal

Sal,

Can you explain??????
C.J.

C.J this was a very famous meeting of a bunch of fig lovers in 1957 that was raided by the fig Police. All joking aside I'm sure they all had and loved figs.

Sal

so far we have at least 10 that would attend, I'm sure there will be more interested once we work out the details.
Does Saturday afternoon work for everybody or a sunday would be better?
Tentative date April 17/18, 24/25
Let me know what works better for most of you.

Oh...THAT kind of "fig" meeting.  Duh.

I am pretty sure that local law enforcement will have little interest in THIS group as long as they have their glasses on and take a good look at the leaf formation on any plants in the vicinity.
