Plant 1.5 FT bady fig tree in ground or not ?or not ?

I need some help for my fig trees.

I live at Surrey(Vancouver) BC, It is Zone 7 ?,  I got an unknown variety fig tree from Craigslist for $7 about 5 years ago, I plant it at a full Sun, but windy   area, During winter time, some branch dead, it has small quantity early crop on old wood then  it bears more than 200+ green figs on new wood but all drop off, I never taste any fig, I will monitor it for 1 more year and If it fail again, I might cut it down.

neighbor told me that their 1 year old "Desert king" fig tree produces 10 super sweet big figs, So I bought a 1.5FT tall slim "Desert king" in 2 gallon pot for $10,  it is about 18C(65F) at daytime, 10C(52F) at night, more rainy day than sunny day here for next few months, I have half shaded but not windy   spot, Should I plant it in ground now ? or should I store them inside my house? There are a lot of risks to a young tree in ground during the winter.  Even if you protect it from the cold it can still be damaged by voles or other pests.
I would store it in a cool dark place inside for the winter and then plant in spring after chance of frost.
That will give the fig tree all summer to grow and strengthen and be prepared for next winter.

Your original tree may well be a Desert King as well.  Desert King only produces a breba or early crop - the second crop will ripen only with the help of pollination from the fig wasp, which is not in your location. All those main crop figs dropping off is usual for that variety.  Your original tree might produce better with winter protection and proper pruning.  There is a nice video on pruning Desert King for breba crops here: http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/how-to-prune-figs-in-cool-climates-for-breba-production-6859360

I see no advantage with planting in ground before winter, especially such a young tree. Protect the pot over the winter and the put it in ground next spring.

Sounds like the original tree was a Desert King. Main crop requires pollination by a wasp that you don't have.

Thanks for everyone for valuable information.

This is my plan B, 10 days ago, For $60 total, I got 3 bigger "desert king" look alike fig trees from Italian old couple who know nothing about "Desert king",  tree size from 3 FT to 7 FT tall with thickness large than 1/2", Seller insisted on plant them in ground now, it will bear fruits next summer, I planted them in ground, and 2 of them, their leaf turn yellow quickly, it doesn't look good, I guess that it is not wise to put a small bady fig tree in ground now.

My 5 years old fig tress, It dropped 200+ small oval shape figs, However, there was about 6-7 " long neck figs" remained and starting rippen, today, mouses/ squirrels ate them all - no figs again for 5 years, it means that I need to install smooth metal sheets wrap around body of tree to stop them climbing up tree.

Hi Eboone:  thanks for your video, I wraped this fig tree up like Xmas "Santa" with expensive red large tarp and top with large white color pail, but it was still branches damaged. in My Area, nobody protect their fig tree as all, However,my fig Tree is getting big and bushes like,  I decide that I will leave it un-protected and see what happen, It might not be hardy fig tree and should not be in my garden, I did plant another 3 FT fig tree 10 Ft near there as well so I can find out that what happen.

In My Plan C, I have couple 2 months old unknown sweet brown fig tree cutting in 1 gallon pot on windows sill, it has small leaf and very weak, I also have 10 days old  true " Desert king" cutting in zig bag rooting.

Hi ricky,
First : Fig trees can strive with cares.
Not protecting your older tree is a bad choice. There are easy things you can do.
If that place is windy, I would plant bushes around  the tree to cut the wind blow ... Let me check: That is exactly what I did for my fig trees ...
I planted currant bushes and elder berries and I keep them at 1,20m /4'' of height or a bit less.
I use the "80 liters trashcan technique". I have a thread on the forum, check it out, it is easy to do.
How big is that old fig tree ? Have you kept it managed or free growing ? When do you prune it ? Brebas are made on old wood, so never prune that tree before the winter, but after harvesting the brebas.
If you've got free guests destroying your crop ... Take actions against the thieves ...

Did you compare the leaves of the old tree to the new ones ? Are they the same ? ie is it a Desert king ?

For the new trees ... We are in Fall so yellowing is just normal. I would (did) plant them in ground now - I planted 4 last year, and one this year some 2 weeks ago.
If you keep them inside, don't forget to water them, and do not heat them too much - or they'll break dormancy and start with lanky growth and that's worse, especially for a desert king ! - as you'll loose all the brebas :(

Good luck !

In our area, During winter time, it is typical -3C , might peak to -10C for one or few days only, not super cold, No body protect their fig tree, I did wrap up my old tree as "Red Xmas Santa" for last 2 years with bad results as branches damaged, However, Old tree become too big now to wrap it up this year, I planted another " Desert king" alike fig tree near it and it is protected by 4FT high solid  aluminum fence,  My old fig tree has difference slim leaf than Desert king wider leaf, also, old fig tree has small breba crop but super large main crop, while "Desert king" in my area, most of them do not have main crop at all, I am pretty sure  that it is not "Desert king", I am in situation that I gave up this older fig tree as well as my garden at that windy corner due to poor results for both.

It is hard to fight with nature of windy corner of my house, I planted 2 more taller fig trees near my house where not windy at all, but it is part shaded, tree needs to grow taller to get full Sun.

I will pick up some leggy 1-2FT tall "true Desert king" and " black mission" fig trees tomorrow,  I will let it sit on indoor window sill ( too bad no Direct sun light),  I might add some 1.5 FT LED light bars for light aid of SUN. it might go to dormancy there because I don't have furnace in my house, Indoor temperature is about 10 - 15C while outside is -5C, I will plant them next spring.

It is hard to stop squirrel to eat free figs, However, Squirrels love Wallnuts tree near my house,  Desert king's figs are rippen at Augest as same time while there are wallnuts, Squirrels do not interested in Figs while they can find wallnuts, However, Wallnuts will dry up at September, Hungrey squirrel will eat everything they can find, My point is that " Desert king" do bear fruits at the right time to avoid Squirrels problem.

It took me many months to know the possible problem of droping main fig, Fig tree do not like wet feet and I watered it everyday and it dropped all figs.
