Planting different varieties in one planter

Did anyone try planting 2 or 3 varieties together in one planter? Will it work? I was thinking to plant 3 varieties together because of less space.
Thanks,
Imran

How big is that planter?  I would never think of such a thing.

In bout 15 gallons planter. Why it is not good idea suzi?
Thanks,

it's called pleaching,,, I have it going on now with 3 walker fig trees. I didn't know that walker is the same as brown turkey when I got the cuttings. Then I found out and decided to try pleaching. you can find a bunch of threads on it in the forum search.

Because you will diminish the growth capacity.  But what you can do, is grow ONE fig in a 15 gallon, and graft 3 other varieties onto that trunk, so the roots have room to supply what the fruit needs.

This is what I was planning to do, a set of braided figs in a 20-28 gallon pot, 3 per pot.  I am not sure if it will work or not but I am willing to try, although the grafting may be an easier option for me, we will have to see how it works out for me.

I have 3 separate varieties in 2 different 7 gallon pots and 2 separate varieties in 2 separate 5 gallon pots. As rookie pointed out it's called pleaching. I have the trunks braided and eventually they'll fuse into one apparent trunk with branches of different varieties.

I would personally recommend grafting and you can always add another variety if you want. I have tree with 4 varieties, and I'll probably add another two or three this weekend. I like having a lot of varieties but space is a big concern.

Note the pleached tree (3 varieties) and description in the attached post.

While you might diminish the growth capacity of each individual tree, the combined total growth of all the trees in a container should be close to that of a single tree everything else being equal.  Be careful of trees with differing growth habits (both roots and tops) in the same container.
