Planting Tips

Hi Everyone,

I'm relatively new here and need some help.  I am from Kannapolis, NC and have recently become addicted to fig trees.  I'm sure you know the feeling.  Right now, I have a Black Mission, a Celeste, a Brown Turkey and a recently acquired "Green Italian."  The guy who sold me that one didn't know the type.  He just knew that the mother tree was in Italy.

I am going to plant the green one and the brown turkey.  The other two are already in the ground.  What are some tips in choosing a good site to plant?  I really don't have full sun anywhere.  On the southwest side of my house, I get evening sun.  ON the other side, I get a little morning and midday sun.  The south side of my property is filled with a row of trees.  Any tips?

Also, does anyone have any recommendations on the soil mix for planting in the ground?  Should I soak the roots a day before planting?

I would plant on the southwest side given your options. I have a tree in the same exposure and it does very well. If you were farther north, I would also suggest you try to plant it close to the house for added protection and some winter radiant heat from the house

Cool.  Thanks.  My AC unit is on the southwest side.  Should I plant it there, so I can get some runoff water from the unit?

Don't think that would hurt, not much water is it?

There is a constant puddle.  I was thinking of digging a reservoir so it would run toward the roots of the tree.

You don't want too much moisture, it can effect the figs when they are ripening. Too much water can cause the figs to split and taste poorly. It might be helpful when the tree is young, but not so much when it is fruiting.

Cool.  I'll keep it away from it then.

Might be safer

I planted peppermint around my AC unit in the drainage bed. When it turns on the whole yard will smell like mojitos.

You're gonna have a yard full of peppermint before you know it. Spreads like crazy, especially when it gets regular watering

It is contained by cement Barry, also is a giant variety that is easy to pull up.
