Plants lost this past winter

So I finally got the courage to gather my casualty list for last winter. Not sure how many other members lost allot of figs last winter but I lost most of mine. All of the following I had in my shed and didnt survive the brutal cold. Allot of hard work and time was spend to gather these cultivars and now gone just like that. I did have more of pons figs I cant remember now.

Theres more I cant remember right now but but after reading this im gonna go cry now.

you lost all THOSE?
how many more exactly do you have? LOL

Yes Sir lost all of those.

I still have a couple dozen trees.

Dang,

Nelson I'd gladly send you some cuttings of some of those if you are looking to replace them?

I heard you lost a lot.... but that's A LOT :(

Tyler

that's huge. well... are you going to replace?  looks like you have a very hostile environment for figs...;/

Maybe you should take a different approach to growing figs. ... like building a green house with a heating system for wintering them.

WOW, sorry to hear that, such a loss :(

Hi Nelson,

I'm sure I can help with 1/2 dozen + cuttings on your list once trees are dormant. Send me a pm and we can make arrangements... With your generous forum contributions, I 'm sure it won't take long to start a new impressive collection.

Oh, Nelson, I may cry for you. That's a who's who of figs. So sorry.

Sorry to hear your loss Nelson, I am sure the Canadian forum members are going to gradually help you get back to normal. Please keep us posted on your progress, wish we could share from US.

Dang!  On the bright side, you got rid of Sierra which I've been considering digging up with the backhoe. :)

Hi guys, I will eventually gather some of those variants back.

Thank you for the offers but for now I will relax with adding too much plus having 2 small kids and a 3rd to be born in the next 3-4 weeks is making growing figs even more difficult.

I have a few young plants now that I will trial in my climate won't be putting any in my shed that's for sure.

Lol Harvey Sierra is that good.

So sorry you lost a really impressive collection. Time to get a portable heater for the shed, they work wonders!

Nelson. Sorry to hear you lost so many.  That is an amazing list of figs.  That was one heck of a winter that will not be forgotten any time soon.

I got some of the figs on this list last year and they are still small but I would be glad to give you any cuttings and some suckers with roots where I can.  Also I have larger plants available of the varieties I sent you cuttings last year.

Hopefully with the other kind Canadians we can replace quite a few from your list but it looks like some are so rare that it may be difficult.

Nelson, you have my sympathies.  As you may remember, I lost 105/110 figs and 27/32 pomegranate trees along with some miscellaneous fruit trees/bushes during the summer of 2009.  As traumatic as it was, most of the varieties I have now were not in the lost group.  Good luck.

What an incredible loss.........can't even imagine the loss in time and effort.

Oh wow nelson, I had no idea you lost that many! I know you said you will relax but I can return the favor you did for me with some of the varieties you lost. Get in touch with me when your ready.
I see you lost your jack lily, did you get to try them before you lost it? I have a small jack lily and I was wondering how it taste?

thank you Rafael took some time to gather.

Hey Joe, no worries my friend. Im in no rush to gather everything I think by 2016 I will have a better collection with less varieties but do appreciate your generosity. I still have 50-60 fig trees more than enough for now.

James, long time no chat hope all is well with you. Yes I do remember that, that was harsh I now know what it felt like not a good feeling . I like you am looking at what survived this darn horrible winter and giving those varieties a second change. Funny how the ones I didnt pay too much attention too survived.

Wills, you are right not just for myself but also for all the generous kind hearted forum members who went out of their way to send me allot of these varieties and most of the time not even wanting money for shipping or anything in return.

I paid for permits phyto sanitary certificates in north america and Europe to get rooted plants imported into Canada legaly allot of money time and effort spent on this addictive hobby. Even got MR Pierre Baud to drive 120 kms to get a phyto to ship to canada lol oh the good times.

This is the second time its happened to me, first time in 2010 when we got locked out of our office and the junked all the fig trees I had in there at the time atleast 70 that time.

Oh how devastating!  I'm so sorry.

That must be heart breaking for you.
I feel bad myself just looking at the list

Wow that's terrible . Sorry to hear that

Time to move, Nelson!  ;)
That's a lot of varieties my friend.  Congrats on the new addition!

I feel your pain. My greenhouse collapsed under the weight of the snow. I lost about 100 plants. (About 70 varieties).

I got you covered on some of these Nelson, I will get you Niagara Black back as well, to me this is great fig in our climate, survived the winter without compelete dying and put figs on so I am counting on this one for years to come.
