Plants lost this past winter

I can help with some good varieties -- more so next year on air layers for colasanti dark,
verdal lounge, Cdd gris and noir or whatever you need from my collection.

It is devastating for sure.
I am interested on what varieties survived if any and why?

Hi Nelson
sorry to hear about the loss of your trees
im just starting out but I'm in Brampton ont if I have anything you like let me know

Hi Nelson,
How did that happen ? You killed a "Dalmatie" ? Mine survived -25°c barely protected in full clay here in February 2012 ... At that time I had a wooden frame with plastic sheets all around - which of course got unsealed at the worst timing
because of the wind ... Since then, I'm using trashcans as protections ! But like you, I had lost my sweet "Sultane" .
Of course my trees are in ground, and yours in pots; in pots, the roots get frost cooked all around the pot.

Nelson-

Just read through your Litany of Fig Losses.  Sorry to read about your frigid massacre.  Having lost all my fig trees, I'll say.... biting the lower lip, a la Bill Clinton..."I feel your pain".  However, my version is without guile, and given with sincerity.

Frank

Nelson,
sorry to hear about your loss.
I sent you a PM indicating my potential help.

Damir

Terrible loss!  In the long I hope you look back at this and consider it a way to cull the varieties that aren't that great and focus on the best.  I can only imagine repotting all of those trees. Yikes!

Oh man! - what a big loss/shame ...

Contact me in late fall, and I may be able to help you recover some of your lost figs by sending 1-3 dormant cuttings (free).

Nelson, I would be devistated, so sorry for your loss. When you are ready to try again let me know. I have several trees from you including Doce.

And to think I felt bad when I lost about 12 trees last winter. I sure hope this winter is better than last. I lost Columbaro Nero and Black Madeira too, along with a few others you didn't list. most of the ones that died 100% had FMV very bad so I guess it's a true statement that FMV weakens the tree to some extent as far as it's hardiness and I'm in zone 7b/8. I feel so sorry for you and all the nothern fig growers always doing the fig shuffle just to grow figs. Then something like this happens.

Wow, Nelson.
That is a lot of trees.
Sorry to hear that.
PM sent.

I about broke out crying as i read your list.

I lost
osbourne proliffic
black bethlehem
albique pateete
3 VdB
Raspberry fig
jolly tiger (striped) never got to tase it.
and Kathleens black.

but my collection was just a handfull to start with.

im sure with the giving nature of the members those that didnt lose will surly help those that did so keep your chin up. just going to be alot of rooting for you over winter. ;)

Thank you Everyone for all the kind words and Offers really means allot to me, but for now I will have to pass as I need some time to figure out what I really want to grow.

I have a feeling this winter will be another cold one, so as a precaution everything will be going in my fathers garage.

I will try and answer all the questions when I get home as I am currently at work :)

Thank you all

Nelson

So very sorry you lost all of those Nelson.
I'd like to help in any way I can.
It will be very interesting and instructive for other Northern fig growers what varieties you choose to replace , what your "must haves" list ends up being.

Dave sorry to hear about your plants it does suck 5 plants or 50 just as painfull.

Jdsfrance:

My Dalmatie never grew too well to be honest, we had 3 weeks of -20C and colder figs can take a beating but this winter was cold and long. I do have an inground Colasanti #3 wich resembles and could possibly be Dalmatie I protected it as I always did with just burlap and a tarp and it had some damage but didn't die to the ground and is now a 6ft bush with atleast 10 branches.

Kerry, I still have Nardi Black, Enrico, EBT, Bebera Preta, Hollier, Desert King, Deleon, Vasilika Sika, O'Rourke, Smith, Florea, Hardy Chicago, Black Tuscan, Rosetta, Battaglia Green, Preto, Qila Saif, Lattarula, Kathleens Black, Pingo De Mel, Lampa Branca,VDB, BT-MD and a few others I cant remember right now.

I also have about 20 small plants I rooted this winter hopefully they survive this winter. A few new in the trials are cul Noir, Campaniere, Vidal, Longue Verte Daout, Pallas, Reculver, Salles.

Nelson

Hi Nelson:
I have the Colasanti Dark & Colasanti White (you had helped me id them as such).  If you want cuttings, let me know - I also have a Kadota, a Black Mission, a Colasanti Brown Honey & a Hardy Chicago.  From what I recall, we are close by so you can drop over and take whichever ones you want.  Let me know.
Robert

Nelson,

Great list of figs!  I'm starting to do some research for what figs might do well in the Phoenix, AZ area.

Hi Nelson,
How are your figs doing ?
Did you get the "campaniere" to fruit ? I have one growing and the first fruit was "bizzare", could say "odd" but it was more than odd, so it was bizzare (french for odd).
Well, the fruit was really small like a cherry.

Hi Kyle with your climate you can grow anything I have grown with better success at ripening. I believe frozenjoe lives your way he would be your best bet to ask.

Jdsfrance

I do have figs on my tree this year none have ripened yet but they do look small. On my dads plant they look weird also.

That's crazy, I am so sorry! Sending positive energy and gook luck for this upcoming winter.
