Please Don't Tell Me This Is A Brown Turkey...

This is a normal looking fig.

 It's not mine, maybe that's why...      ;(

It's around the block from me, the owner of the house planted it this year near the front gate.

I have noticed it since April,   Nice looking little tree, but nothing special.

So I thought.

Saw it today, and I swear overnight it doubled in size and darkened to that lovely
color you see.

I was amazed.

I know the owner and asked him where he got the plant/cutting from.

He said it was a cutting from his tree in the back yard, and all he did was place
it into the ground last WINTER, with NO PROTECTION at all.

I have no idea how the old timers so that.

It looks like a couple of figs should ripen this week,  he said I was free to take a
couple and help myself to cuttings from either it or the parent tree.

The eye on the green figs is really bright red.

Is it a dreaded Brown Turkey?

Hello Nick
Nice looking fig,I don't know what kind it is but I would like a cutting from that tree if possible.
Vito

I don't think that is a dreaded BT, but would you mind getting me a cutting of that?   WOW, love the eye.  Nice color on the fig.  Please?

If/when you slice into the rip fruit, please take photos and post them for us.
You need to ask the owner where the tree in the back came from.

Nope, it is not a brown turkey. Great looking fig though.

1.  Pick a fig.
2.  Eat it.

If you like the fig...does it really matter?

Maybe. Need to see inside a ripe fruit.

Since it is in NY, it mus be "Eastern" Brown Turkey. Otherwise, Satelite has the necessary diagnostic strategy.

Jason, and Jon.

I'm in a tricky spot.

The figs are still a day or two away from being ripe.
They are getting softer, but not quite there yet.

The owner said I can have them no problem.
What I am worried about is they are literally facing the sidewalk with tons of people passing every day.

Most will admire them, a couple will touch them, but someone may take them
before they ripen.

Should I not risk losing them and pick them now even though they are not fully
ripened or to really tell what they are do they NEED to be fully ripened and soft?

I am not familiar with Brown Turkey enough to know if that tell-tale void
shows up early or late in the figs development.

P.S. 1. I don't think it's a Brown Turkey and I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's not.
        2. To the people that E/M P/M me, no worries, if it turns out to be a nice fig, there will be plenty of cuttings to go around.
         3. Still planing on going into the back yard to take a couple of pics of the mother tree.

And Just like that they were gone.

I checked up on them early this morning and they were still firm and not ready.

I asked yesterday if I should pick them early or allow them to ripen and risk them being taken.

Not one person replied.

I am not certain if the owner picked them early ( Have not seen him yet )
or a passerby that wanted to grab them before someone else did.

They are facing the sidewalk on a busy street, making them an easy target.

There are still a dozen or so green figs remaining on the tree, hopefully a couple
will continue to ripen without being taken.

Take a newspaper and clothes pins and wrap them. That will put people on notice that the are being watched.

Good suggestion, Jon.

I need to wait until I see the owner of the tree again to bring that up to him.

Maybe I can also suggest to him a net, similar to one I put up on my patio
to protect my fig and other fruits.

It's a really good neighborhood, with 99.% of  people oohing and admiring
figs in the front yards. but that 1%  is sometimes all it takes.

There are still a bunch of figs left on that tree so there is still hope.

great looking tree no matter what it turns out to be nice find.

I'm not sure if that works in CA Jon, but in NY, your just giving them something to read while they're eating your fig! LOL

LMAO, oh that was too funny dominick know exactly what you mean.

Hi, hml597

You have a very nice looking fig.

Congratulations.

They look similar, but I will not be able to be certain if they are the same, until
I open a ripe fig.

I should be able to soon.

Thanks for the post.

Nick you are just having a horrible time with figs this year.

Well I have good news and bad news..

The Good:

It looks like another fig is getting close to ripening, and since it's lower than eye level I should be able to pick it, open it up and taste it before someone else does.

The Bad:

I picked an unripened one, to take a peek inside.
I chose the largest one closest to turning as possible.
When I sliced it open, I saw a void large enough to drive a Mack truck thur.

Seems Jon was right,  It may be a Eastern Brown turkey.  ;(

Doesn't mean it's a bad fig, I was just hoping it was something more...  " exotic."

I still plan to pick a ripe one if possible in the next few days.
