This is an air layer on a Black Madeira. The plant is growing aggressively at this point. Only thing I'm not real sure about is if the fact  that it is on green and barely lignified limb. Will it work?

You can go wrong with a airlayer. Moist not wet media and let it do its,think. Nice tree

The thickness of the wood is your main concern. If you scored the wood without any problems then you should be good to go. I've scored very thin wood and ended up breaking it in two.

Just don't make the mistake of removing the air layer too early. Black Madeira is known to be a slow rooter--I'd wait at least 4 months with something as precious as that.

I did not score the wood at all. Is that always necessary?

Not necessary to score wood.  But it might take it longer, then again if the plant is growing vigorously you will be likely to see roots faster, than if plant was at a stagnant stage.

Blackfoot, imnew at this so i cannot tell how your air layer is wrapped. Is it on the one main branch of your tree? If so, what is the purpose? Thx!

Hi Meg. Yes, it is on the main branch of the tree. The purpose is to get it to root at the air layer, and then to cut it off and have  a new plant. In  my case there is another reason. I am only trying  to get this particular fig to late spring in good condition. But since it is growing very aggressively I realized it will be 4 or 5 feet tall by that time If I don't have  a way to curb its growth. Hence the air layer. 

I see. It makes sense. When u cut off the rooted air layer, the original plant can still live or not? Maybe that doesnt matter at that point...

I have had airlayers that were not scored both root and not root . Ring removed root for sure. It might work just fine, might not.

Well, I'll give it some time. If it doesn't root. I can always score it later. Thanks for the replies.

Happy New Year to everyone! This morning I observed my 1st root on my air layer of Black Madeira. A nice New Years gift. That's 7 weeks. Honestly I didn't think it would take that long. It occurred to me that it may have been because it's  a relatively small root enclosure and is inundated with light. So I made an attempt to shade it with newspaper to help it along. I just wanted to follow up with this. I cut the air layer off 9 days ago on March 11th. There were a lot of fine roots but they were not what I would describe as vigorous looking. However, I knew they were alive because I was watering the air layer every day with 10 to 15 ml of water and it was always on the dry side.

So, now 9 days later the air layer is pushing a few nice white roots to the side of its container. Its base is rigid (I had to prop it up with tin foil for 4 or 5 days since it doesn't extend into the soil very far). Both the original plant (which had gone into sleep mode) and the air layer are pushing out new buds.

Especially considering it was over the winter months and you did this all under artificial lights :) Now you are all set for both to explode with growth for you this spring! Well here is an update. Turns out this is not a Black Madeira LOL!. I am sure just an honest mistake but a yellow fig(I think it's a yellow fig , we'll see very soon)? Ha ha ha. Not sure why I think its so funny. Very interested to see what it really is!  

At a certain point you have to just laugh and get over it. I think your reaction is perfect. My three failed attempts to get green ischia have given me some perspective and afford me info on a couple of other varieties that forum members helped to ID. I hope the surprise variety is tasty to you.
