Plum tree question for NorthEast (Zone 6)

Hi everyone, my apologies in advance for hijacking the figforum with a non-fig question.

I am looking for a recommendation on an AMAZING tasting Plum variety for the North East zone 6.  I taste a lot of average plums. (grocery store).

I have had Plums from produce stands/grocery stores that have a deep red/almost purple interior with a dark skin.  I cannot seem to find this variety from google searches.

Maybe it is not a Plum, but a Pluot/Plumcot, etc?  anyway, any thoughts or recommendations for a Superb Variety?

Thanks!

Mike

There are several plums that'll do well here...Methley is usually well recommended by extension services. I have a small one from this spring that grew very well. Due to disease pressure in the NE I wouldn't plant just anything.

Purple Heart fits your description to a tee.  Fedco Trees sells it or can supply scionwood.
I grow a few varieties, my favorites from this past year were Santa Rosa and Toka.

Lots of great recommendations for plum varities!

I have Stanley, Italian, burbank and Shiro plums and I find they are all delicious if tree ripened if not then they are bland.
If you let them go past ripe then you start getting very jammy flavours.

So if you find the ones in the store bland then they were probably picked before they were ripe.  Your own tree may turn out suitable for you since you will not pick until they are ripe.

Mike, are you looking for japanese or european plums or either? I heard a lot of good things about the japanese ones.

I'm in zone 6B and get all my fruit trees (including plum) from Schlabach's Nursery (Medina, NY):

Schlabach's Nursery
2784 Murdock Rd, Medina NY 14103
phone: (585) 798-6198 (best time to call is AM)
Toll-free voice mail for catalog requests only: 1-866-600-5203.

They are an Amish nursery, but have great prices and ship very healthy bare root trees using good rootstock.  Give them a call at 585-798-6198 to request a catalog.  They sell both Japanese and European plum trees @ $16 per tree plus shipping.  I've been ordering from them for the past 7 years without issue.  The only catch is since their Amish, they have no webpage and all payments must be done by check or cash.  Not really a big deal, but I thought I'd mention it.

Personally I'm growing a Green Gage Plum tree which is self-fertile (make sure you check on this as many plum trees need a cross pollinator).

If you want a nursery with a website, Adams County Nursery has a large selection and I have been happy with their recommendations of plums/pluots for me.  Since I live in Eastern Oregon I don't know what varieties would grow well in your area.  There is also Cummins Nursery in New York.

My favorite is early italian prune plum, great for baking or for eating fresh.  Be prepared for aphids, they love the trees.
