Plumeria

So pretty Simon! I started 5 this summer but didn't get any flowers. Man they are pretty!

When I get cuttings I try to find tips with inflows. Anything else will take a while to sprout an inflow, I've had a cutting go 2 years without seeing flowers.

Can you explain an inflow?

Why, oh why did you post these beautiful pictures of plumeria!!! Now I want a few. I'm n NY and I'm looking for the best place to order from. Any suggestions?

Funny thing is you probably have neighbors that have them but you've never noticed... It's like when you first got into figs, now you notice every single fig tree when driving around, haha...

Now, after reading through all these postings, I decided that I needed some more excitement in my life.   So on an impulse, I ordered 5 cuttings from: "A PIECE OF PARADISE" nursery, in Hawaii.  Can't beat the prices, the colors, and especially, the cutting deals that this nursery offers.

Anyway, I decided that my first experience with Plumerias would be with the incendiary, "Kaleinani" ....which should produce red hot, orange-gold-red, blossoms.  What I love about this cultivar is that as the individual flowers age at different rates, the umbel will display all different color flowers, i.e. some orange, gold, yellow, and combinations of all the colors.  I was told that in the hotter temperatures, the color of the orange flowers will become deeper.  That will work for me, as I am partial to the blends of oranges, golds, yellows, creams.  The pinks, mauves, magentas, violets....not so much.

Hopefully, by the end of the week I will have my cuttings delivered.  Then, the new saga begins.  Will they root?...will they rot?...will they bloom?...will I curse and swear?...will I smile when I sniff my first flowers?

While searching around for cuttings I found a few nurseries that sell Plumeria:
1-  A Piece of Paradise
2.  Exotic Plumeria
3.  BNJ Exotics
4.  Florida Colors
5.  Brad's Buds and Blooms
6.  Jungle Jack's Plumeria
7.  Maui Plumeria Gardens
8.  Durham Botanicals
9.  Upland Nursery

Happy hunting.

I was wondering just what method I would use to root my new Plumeria cuttings.  A quick search led me to the "PLUMERIAS FOREVER" website (plumeriasforever.com).  Check out the "Burlap Bag Rooting" photo montage on this site.  The process makes a lot of sense to me and I will try it. I will use natural burlap, and cotton string to hold the burlap around the bottom of the cuttings.  Eventually, after the root ball is planted, the burlap and string will rot away.   I also like the way the Styrofoam blocks are jammed into the pot to help support the newly planted/rooted cutting.

(Sorry I could not link the photos to this thread.  I don't know how to do this).

N. B.   This "Burlap Bag Method" method might work for rooting Fig cuttings, also.

Just when I forgot about plumerias, here it is again and I just have to look. :) Good luck with your cutting, Frank.

Hi all, I happen to be on Maui as we speak and the flowers and plants are amazing. Trying to figure out how I can get some cuttings past agriculture and back home. Will probably purchase some, but would like to get a keepsake from the resort. Oh well, not thinking about it too much, it hurts while on vacation. Aloha

David, my daughter bought some on her trip to the Islands a couple of years back. She bought them prepackaged and certified and approved to carry back to the mainland.

I would urge anyone contemplating the purchase of cuttings/rooted cuttings, to patronize "A Piece of Paradise".  Derrick could not be more pleasant, accommodating, and totally willing to please.  First-Class service.

I was bitten by the plumeria bug ten/fifteen years ago. On line shopping for cuttings and eBay make it easy. At first I ordered cuttings of the most fragrant. They didn't bloom. Then I did a little homework as to which plumeria bloomed the most and bought those. I fertilized with the special Tropicals fertilizer. They’re in full sun most of the year except when they’re in a plastic tent greenhouse for the winter. A wind storm blew the greenhouse, lights and all into a neighbor’s yard and broke up some of the plants into more cuttings, which rooted. I’ve raised plumeria from seed to three and four foot plants. Now I may get two or three blooming plants each year out of around thirty. All of them have outgrown their pots and are patiently sitting outside now, waiting for me to get off the computer and tend to them. They want a lot of attention and don’t make the effort worth it. At least that’s been my experience. My favorite one is Dwarf Singapore Pink (it’s white). It stays a nice compact size and actually blooms with some degree of regularity and has a nice fragrance. Confetti was another favorite, but was lost one year I tried leaving them outside for the winter. These pretty little seeds or cuttings can grow into trees pretty quickly which is what nature intended.

Around the Bangalore airport they have landscaped with large white blooming plumeria trees the size of large fig trees. Personally, I’d rather have fig trees, given the same space and sunny location.

I'm pleased to report that mine survived the winter! I brought them inside the house and they are already leafing out. Very happy they're still alive since I had left them outside too long in winter :)

Since my last post in July, I have added 4 more plumies to my collection. My friend in town grows them and had a 'fire sale' for those of his trees that lost their tags, $5 for 1 gal. I grabbed 4. Should have grabbed more. :-) They are looking great on the back patio now in 5-gal pots. I'm curious to know what I got.

Bass, love your yellow ruffled plumie, it's gorgeous.

PS. I have failed miserably to try to grow these from cuttings. Never had one take.

Oh, yeah, I'm going to Honolulu, Hawaii in Aug too...celebrating a big belated bday. :-)

The prepackaged ones are only labeled yellow, pink, and white. I am planning on bringing some back for myself. If anyone is interested in some (about 9 bucks per certified cutting) let me know by Sunday about 5 pm Est. I'll see what I can do.

Very nice!
My one plumeria seems alive and healthy except the tips are black and there is no new growth yet. I fear the worst! :-(

Wow, so many flowers on such a small tree!

Joe, by black tips do you mean like small claw- like tips?

yes, exactly. They do look like small claws. Plumeria is new to me. Is this trouble?

If anyone is interested in growing some plumeria from seed send me a PM... I have a few left over that i'd be happy to share. I have about 15 seedlings growing that are about 5" tall since starting them in February. Every seed I tried germinated quickly within a few days. They are from a recent vacation in Huatulco, Mexico.

Joe: Don't worry too much about those, those are actually the leaf buds. If they are black and dry, they'll fall of with the shoot growth and new ones will develop. If you start seeing themturn a dark purple or reddish, that means they'll leaf out. The more important thing to look at is the actual plant, if it's green and firm then it's doing good. Just like with figs, you gotta be patient.

Here's a small cutting I started last summer, the cutting itself is in horrible shape but those reddish tips give me hope, haha.

Here's a pic that has those black tips that never developed when the shoot had a growth spurt. Sorry for the blurry pic, and why does it always post sideways?!?!
