Possible Solution to Beasts Who Steal Figs

Hi All,

I've seen Dennis and others complaining about the beasties damaging figs and trees.  Here is my experience.

This year, I had my newly rooted cuttings and other young trees in containers growing on a shaded porch at my brother's house.  My sister-in-law mandated I grow them "organically".  Given organic fertilizers take some time to break down into a form that is useful to the tree, I did what anyone else in my situation would do.  When I woke up every morning I peed in a 5 gallon bucket, topped it off with water and fed my trees...

In the past I've had problems with the animals (dogs included) taking off with my small containers, digging up trees in the field, etc... but that stopped when I started the urine treatment.  Fast forward to this summer.  I was traveling quite a bit.  I had someone who watered my trees, but I did not have them feed the trees.  After I was gone for a couple of weeks, I got an update photo.  I had two small 'Beers Black' trees in one gallon containers on the porch (the rest I had up on tables) along with a couple of larger containers which were still in the photos at this point.  In the next set of pictures, about a week later, they were gone.  I'm not sure if it was coincidence or the smell of urine had been washed out.  It may, however be worth a try to prevent some of the damage.

Absolutely, I had my grown son pee around my bamboo when the squirrels tried eating the bamboo shoots, it worked. Adult man pee will also keep critters out of your veggie gardan, sorry ladies, ours is useless, I believe it's the testosterone.

Peeing on roses can fight mildew and black spot too.

I wonder if there's a market  for pee on ebay?????????

Tami, it's funny that you had to protect your bamboo from critters.  Here, it grows like a weed and is an invasive species.

James, I have used pee to jumpstart my compost pile.  Supposedly the extra nitrogen gets it going.  Lately squirrels have come up with the bright idea of burying walnuts in a couple of my containers so maybe urine is the solution.

I will wait until others experiment is complete to make sure the smell and taste does not reach the heavenly fruit...

I think the golden quality depends on what you eat and drink. A watermelon defense might be different from a 6-pack of some nice dark beer! :)
Anybody is willing to experiment? Just please, no Budweiser ...

I believe I mentioned this in the recent deer damage thread that not only is urine a deterrent to deer, it is a good, cheap alternative for fertilizing plants too. I discovered this from watching a guy named John Kohler/GrowingYourGreens on YouTube. He has tons of videos on organic gardening. He also states that it's best if the urine is clean, meaning no heavy prescription drugs etc.

LOL my urine is worthless considering my failed kidneys and very low output. Just as well, the idea kinda skeeves me out. Good luck all you pee brains

Thats just gross to pee and water your fig plants with it im sorry James but thats my opinion.

I do it. I'm the largest animal in the neighborhood. Keeps them all away.

Remind me to not ask James for any cuttings...LOL    Don't know what he would send..LOL

James and the rest of you guys are funny, Just pee on the corners of your property, thats considered marking your territory and watch out for any adult male Lions..LOL

Rewton,
I'm afraid you have my expensive clumping bamboo confused with the cheap running bamboo that will take over your neighborhood.

Tami, yes I did confuse the two.  Leave it to the squirrels to figure out that a plant is valuable and then attack it.

Especially since, for the first several years, it only puts up 1 or 2 culms twice a year! They eat the shoot and you're really set back.
