Hi All,
I've seen Dennis and others complaining about the beasties damaging figs and trees. Here is my experience.
This year, I had my newly rooted cuttings and other young trees in containers growing on a shaded porch at my brother's house. My sister-in-law mandated I grow them "organically". Given organic fertilizers take some time to break down into a form that is useful to the tree, I did what anyone else in my situation would do. When I woke up every morning I peed in a 5 gallon bucket, topped it off with water and fed my trees...
In the past I've had problems with the animals (dogs included) taking off with my small containers, digging up trees in the field, etc... but that stopped when I started the urine treatment. Fast forward to this summer. I was traveling quite a bit. I had someone who watered my trees, but I did not have them feed the trees. After I was gone for a couple of weeks, I got an update photo. I had two small 'Beers Black' trees in one gallon containers on the porch (the rest I had up on tables) along with a couple of larger containers which were still in the photos at this point. In the next set of pictures, about a week later, they were gone. I'm not sure if it was coincidence or the smell of urine had been washed out. It may, however be worth a try to prevent some of the damage.
