Pot bound

As a curiosity I rooted a clipping from my brown turkey this last fall. It has quickly outgrown each of its containers.

Last night I made another transfer from a 1 gallon to a 4 gallon. Check out the pic.

Timothy: Your tree is very nice; however, this tree does not look like a Brown Turkey too. Please rotate the photos upright. Thanks.

Best,

Holy Roots Batman!!

The second pic does not look like a Brown Turkey to me

Good vigorous root system you have there...what I usually do before uppotting is to take a razor knife to the root system and slash them (vertically) around the entire root ball...then, using my fingers I loosen up the entire root system as much as possible so they can stretch out in the larger pot...at first it seems like you're doing harm to the tree, but in the long run this method stimulates even more vigorous growth...good luck with your fig tree.

I agree with Vince.  If you just plop that thing with those circling roots into a larger pot, it will restrict its own growth.  Those roots need to be pruned.  Now might not be the best time to do it, though.  Maybe check it out in the early spring before it gets too far leafed out and see if you need to do trim those roots.

I'll also jump on the "probably not a brown turkey" bandwagon.

I contemplated thinning the root growth prior to repotting but ended up loosening the root ball and placing it in the new pot.  loosening the ball was tricky.  The roots were very thick and looked healthy to these novice eyes.

Good call on the misidentification.  I purchased the plant at a whole foods last year with the label "brown turkey".  A Google search reveals the leaves are much to long and slender to be brown turkey.  Any idea what it might be?  I've included another pick of the parent plant, $1 bill inserted to get a size reference.

Tim, Your plant looks like a Brunswick to me.

Wei, I see the resemblance.  I must say that when my fruit are ripening the eye becomes red and opens wide exposing an inner cavity.  Otherwise the leaves, outer fruit, and fruit cross section (pics from F4F) looks very similar.  In the next day or two I should get some ripe fruit, I'll post a pic with cross section.

I agree. This is looks definitely like a Brunswick!

Brunswick.

Good job on rooting, ain't it a real kick!

Rooting is definitely very cool.

I thing everybody made a good call on Brunswick. Not 100% ripe but close enough.

It is a Brunswick. I also have a Brunswick just like yours that was mislabeled brown turkey that I purchased from lowes some years ago. This is what you have. It's a good grower here in nj but I must say that the taste of the figs are only average at best

depends on the mood, i might just run a knife deep into the center and run them up and down. or, i might set my water hose to "jet" and blast the root until there is no soil left. seems both method works fine for me. figs are tough. or i might do both...
