Potting soil question

Well I'm not sure I've made a prince of a mistake or not, but I'm suspecting I shouldn't have used the mix that I did. I received my very first fig tree about 4-5 weeks ago and promptly potted it with a very rich potting soil with fertilizer already mixed in with 4 months of feeding ability. Received my next 2 figs about 2 weeks ago and promptly repeated with same mix.

My questions are:
Is this not a good idea?
I'm not expecting figs this year, will the steady release of fertilizer help give me the overwintering growth I really need as they are first year plants and make it alright for just this season?
Is the bad (if it is) of what I used, the rising acidity that it will cause, and should I add some granular lime now to counteract it?
Should I just try to mix up a proper planting medium and go ahead and re-pot now? Or, if not now, re-pot early spring next year before they break dormancy?

Thank-you for any and all advice,
bill o.

I have potted quiet a few figs in Miracle Gro garden soil and potting mix.  Both have some slow release fertilizer in them.  I have never had a problem with them and in fact usually add some more fertilize to it after a few weeks

I use MG potting mix with added pearlite, about 50/50, when I up pot to 1 gallons.  Just be careful when you water, the potting mix will hold a lot.  I would let the soil nearly dry before watering until good roots are established.

The slow release fert won't hurt any and adding some lime will help.

How old are the trees and how big are the pots?

Thank-you for the answers, am relieved to know I should be ok. I'll make the mix more 'airy' when it's time to up-pot.

Phil, to answer you I have to admit to another small faux pas. The first fig I got is a Celeste, very beautiful and leafy, maybe 10-12 inches tall. It came in a 4" pot and right away I replanted it in a maybe 15 gallon pot. I now know I should have took it up to that size in steps. The other 2, a Blk Mission, and a VDB are pretty much spriglets maybe 4-5 inches with a couple of leaves each, and I only re-potted them into gallon size pots.

Thanks,

I would be concerned with the 15 gallon holding too much water. If you can do it carefully you might want to try repot that one.

Thank-you Phil. I've made up a shopping list and will gather up the materials for Al's 5-1-1 tomorrow.
