Hi I received a 18 inch dormant bare root plant without any soil. Has been in transit for 2 weeks and roots look nice but a bit dry . Temperatures here in NY are still cold and down to 30s at night. I will plant these in pots so should I soak roots and pot up soon and leave in dark garage or leave unpotted for a few weeks so it does not wake up too early? 12 inch pot sound right? Either way should I spray a little water on dry roots? I am a new grower and want to assure these plants have best chance of surviving. Thanks very much Barry
I received a bare root fig this past winter. I soaked the roots overnite and potted it up the next day. It is doing wonderfully. I would get it in a pot as soon as possible.
Agree with Dave, pot it up ASAP, and as long as its dormant you can keep it in dark garage above freezing. Soaking roots probably a good idea too, just use cold water and soak in garage where it will stay cool.
I just got a bare root BT yesterday I want to put it in a pot until it breaks dormancy should I pot it up and just work the soil between the roots or is there a better way ?
I would soak it then pot it up now. Temps are supposed to be up in the 50's next week. That is after the possible snow showers later today.
Since spring is so close I agree with soaking it in cold water overnight, let air dry and then plant in pre-moistened soil and hold the water until it wakes and starts growing. But I don't think there is any hurry. As you long as you plant before it breaks dormancy. You can keep it cool in slightly moistened peat moss (or similar) and then plant in spring before it breaks dormancy. ( I know it is supposed to be spring but it has been below freezing for days and was -11C (10F) last night.
OK thanks for ur help
