Potting up dormant figs

Hi everybody.
I have a Peter's Honey that I bought at a local nursery last summer, about 3' tall. It came in a 2 gallon pot.
I want to transplant it into a 4 gallon pot this year. I have everything I need, but my question is about timing.
I know you only transplant a fig when it's dormant, which it is.
If I transplant it this early, am I asking for trouble?
Will it somehow break dormancy and force me to bring it upstairs to warmer environment?
I have two cats, and I don't want to do that, since ficus is poisonous to cats.
For a fig to stay dormant through a repotting, do you transplant without watering it? If you water the new mix, are you taking a chance at rotting the roots?
Should I just wait until the tree is about to break dormancy?
Does anybody transplant in the middle of winter?

Good questions. I'm about to go thru the same thing for the first time. Looking forward to reading some good feedback.......... What if also you still need to do some pruning? I figured I would prune as I pot up. Also the right time to feed? I guess a couple more weeks and we should be able to come out of the shed.

When you up pot you wont affect dormancy.  It's mainly temperature that affects dormancy.  There's no point in fertilizing a dormant plant.  You want some moisture in the soil but some air as well.  You don't want the roots sitting in standing water held by the soil.

You also want to check the roots.  If they're pot bound you can untangle or trim.
