Preto

lol Its true Martin they give me the creeps too and Its so true what you way I would pay close attention to when the bud tip would start to open and yup there they were just chilling playing cards fliping me the finger. Cant wait another month and they are all going to my parents backyard.

Hey Nelson im gonna run and try to pick up some coarser perlite if i can ever get off this machine.
Aren't you suppose to be at  "WK"

 ; )

lol Martin I am at work but you know how the saying goes when the dog's away the cats will play, Thanks for reminding me Martin I need to buy some today too as I went though 4 bags in the last 2 weeks potting up around 30 plants.

Since retirement work has been a 4 letter word !
Im off to see the wizard just found a place that has some coarser perlite im going to go check out. . The regular stuff im not so fond of.
Hey Neslon
ole saying
don't work too hard!  ; )

Well the coarser perlite did not pan it was fertilome perlite and same stuff size wise as mircale grow's perlite when he opened a bag for me.
But they had fertilome upm potting mix so i bought a small bag to work with as my other type of potting soil i was getting very low on.
Did not need much as i'm almost finished for season with scion.

One thing that I have noticed that is consistent with the Preto cuttings and ALL of the cuttings from Sue V. is that they root along the entire length of the cutting.  Is this because of the maturity of the tree, the short distance (1/2-1") between the leaf rings, or something else?

C.J.

Today i took this picture and this Preto is firmly rooted in the pot now.
These are my favorite sticks to root with the bud on top as it makes shaping it into a tree form real easy for me , i just stake it eventually and trim the horizontal growth some as it grows upwards and mid season top it barring it grows well.
The following growing season the lateral branches will grow nice and i keep the top trimmed.

Jenia i think maybe its that way because the nodes are spaced real close thats just a guess though.

Thanks goes out to Sue and Jon, some of same will eventually go to Missouri and friends in Chicago.

My favorite part of the picture is the forum in the background.

I too like end cuttings for rooting, especially nice thick ones.  I feel bad about snipping off developing figs, but I take it as a sign that at least water is moving through the cutting!

Little update on my Preto it is now in a 3G pot.

Nelson that looks great it put on some nice growth for you unlike my black Madeira which doesn't look much different than my 1st pic other than a few new leaves but I think it will kick in soon as I sen the same with my VDB for months until it decided to grow. Like Al said we are on people time and they are on tree time. lol

Nelson you are da man with the rooting midas touch. Nice plants.

Jenia, I think that the rooting all over the cutting is because they were cuttings with very little 1st year wood, and were mostly 2,3,4-year wood because they came from a mature tree that grew very little each year.

I have also noticed that several had tons and tons of roots, but seemed to have more difficulty producing a shoot - especially if there was no 1-year wood at the tip - perhaps because the buds were older and less "motivated".

I have heard in the past that the best rooting cuttings has a little 2-year wood at the bottom end, and this experience seems to have added credibility to that idea.

I have six little figlets on one of my pretos. They're really nice trees. The leaves are deep green and they have a toughness to them that none of my other new cuttings have. Sue and Jon--great find; thanks for making these guys available.I'm really excited to see how they fare up here.

Here's a picture from a few days ago of my preto. It was the first of my new cuttings to put on figs. I think there's a OK possibility that they might ripen this fall. Anybody else have figs yet?

Preto has a few little figs.

My question is this,

Is it Preto or Preta?
Or are they two different figs?

I have the Preta which I got from Sue.

Hi Rafed,

Bebera Preta
Fico Preto

i dont have the Bebera Preta but there is that name also

I have fico preto and madeira which may or may not be the same.

Here is my preto today, the one in Post 1 did not make it, almost does not count .

Martin looking good sorry to hear about your other plant, I too lost one or two of the Preto when my dog made a disaster in my office. But still have 2 plants and they both have small figs, cant wait to see what they will do next season.

Fico Preto and Madeira Black are cut the same way and growing in similar fashion, this was not done intentionally as Madeira was 30 inches tall last season but did not like the cool spring shuffling in and out of garage.

So I noticed from Sue's Preto pictures on her website that the figs take about three months to go from figlets to ripe figs in Point Loma. My tree put out six figlets the first week of June, so I'm hoping that they stay on pace and start to ripen early next month. Here are two pictures. The figs have been the same size for a long time, but I think--maybe--that they've puffed up ever so slightly over the past few days.

One more thing...anyone notice that the leaves have a strange texture for black figs? They're really thick and fuzzy.

Hi Matt,
if you notice a slight change in color thats another sign as well sometime the shade of green start to get somewhat lighter at the very first sign on some dark types.
Please keep us informed whatever happens.
Thanks.

Hey Matt looking good, my Preto figs are a little smaller than yours and even thought I picked off most of them I dont think the ones on there will have enough time to ripen. I wish I would of picked the smaller figs off earlier, on both plants oh well live and learn.

One of the figs on my tree started to ripen on Tuesday. Here it is last night. The clover's for good luck.
