Preto Breba

Anyone else still have breba hanging on their Preto?

I checked my notes from last year and and they show a ripening date of 6.21.14.

I understand brebas form on last year wood. Do they also form on wood older than last year?

Mine all dropped.

Hi Jerry,

I'm not seeing anything on 3rd year wood on any of my tree's.Breba was not a consideration when I chose the
varieties, this is the first year I'm paying attention if it's a breba or main.Years past my only concern was to get to it
before the critters.

Never seen or tasted a ripe breba on Preto or any of its siblings
A good deal of Common and even Smyrna figs do show through April a nice light crop of brebas but these never reach maturity.  Believe they would need pollination but by the time they are receptive neither wasps nor pollen are available.

Hi Francisco,

Yes,this is why I ask.I'd read that the breba fall, but my notes from last year indicated I had something ripe mid June.
I assumed they were breba, this year I wanted to document them. They are clearly on 2nd year wood, well affixed and we're
wandering into June again.

I have never seen a Preto breba reach that size. Are you sure this is a Preto? Of course, an occasional breba may always set, even on a Unifera tree, but this is quite a cluster, and no accident!

Hi Rafe,

Tree was sourced from Jon,2011.Fruit and leaf conform to type.Last year I had 2 breba ripen. This year I'm looking at that 4 fig cluster, there's no other breba on the tree.
Jon had mentioned this was the best year for breba he's seen in the last 30 years?Maybe these drought conditions or my cultural practices played a part?I don't know. All
I know is it's an anomaly and was curious if anyone else had encountered this.

It does look like you are growing Figo Preto.  I believe I had a few brebas forming early in the Spring but they quickly fell off.  The main crop figs are just now starting to appear.

How do the breba taste compared to main crop?

Except for these 4 all the other breba's fell before they were pea size.I only noticed
these when I air layered away the center earlier this month. As far as taste I can only
remember being very happy I had a ripe fig.Once those 2 were gone it was another 3
weeks before the main crop started.I'll revive this thread when they ripen and are removed.

Cheers,
