Price of figs

Some local street vendors in NYC had some quality figs yesterday. 2 pints for $5. Each pint is essentially around a pound. When I went out today (I didn't have cash on me yesterday), I didn't find any. In price comparing, the same ONE pint at Whole Foods is about $6. At the Grand Central Market (which for produce, I think is Zabar's), ONE pint is $14.99.

I could say all the fruit was generally of the same quality, though Zabar's was probably best. Within say a 15-block radius, the prices are dramatic. I realize it's the city, I was also not an economics major. I get it and I don't get it.

Fig cuttings are cheaper than 5 figs in my country hahaha that is why I grow them

Street vendors have much lower overhead costs.  No building to maintain, no electricity bills, no property taxes, and no non-essential employees.  Grand Central market is prime real estate, I have no idea where Whole Foods is, but I doubt its as prime as Grand Central.  Grand Central would also get more tourists, so more people willing to pay the higher prices.

Definitely, you're exactly right. Location, overhead, clientele, everything. Just blows my mind there can be a $12 difference for 1 pint within such a short space.

Speedmaster - at Whole Foods yesterday I bought a really nice LSU Purple tree for $12.99 instead of the $6 pint of Calymyrna figs :)

I bought a flat of Panachee in Queens sunday for $13, 15-20 beautiful figs

I found my bargain at the street vendor by Port Authority in front of the NY Times: 5 pints for $15, about 80ish Black Mission figs. I don't have much experience in tasting a lot of different figs yet, but these will be good for preserving so I can do some cooking.

The grand central market is ridiculous. It is Chelsea produce I think not zabars. During prime strawberry season I think it was 8 bucks a pint. The other berries there are ridiculous too. I walk through there often since work nearby but usually never buy.

Ako. What do you grow? In Pot or ground? It was 2 bucks a pint for figs at the fruit vendor here in queens too.

Hi - I grow in pots. Though I might have to rethink at least part of my trees soon. Running out of space and my one-bay garage is full of beekeeping equipment, gardening equipment, and fig trees in the winter. I might try to plant some of the older ones in the yard.

I have Sicilian (don't know what kind, it's how I bought it from Bill's Figs), Lattarulla, BT, and Chicago Hardy as older trees. I bought a bunch of cuttings from John and smaller trees this year: White Genoa, Peter's Honey (I grew this before, liked it, killed it), Negronne, Vista, Petite Negri, LSU Purple, Conandria.

The Grand Central Market is such expensive eye candy.....but I have bought spices from there.

I bought a fig plant for about $1.3 and a tray of about 12 brown turkey from turkey for about $6.5 which makes 5 figs cost about $2.7
Fig plants are cheaper for me and they produce for a looooong season compared to the store availability.
Edit: not buying any more brown turkey as they taste bland compared to my figs, yeah they are smaller but taste alot better than those unripe figs...

We need to check Corrado's in Clifton. They have a variety of figs at good prices sometimes.
