Problems/Cures/Suggestions (bla, bla) Re F4F Site

I begin to say that this is one heck of a big growing fig forum web site

(thanks to you_all_know_who -:  Jon).

Pertaining  to the (software) site development,
however; there are a couple of things that still bug me.
Even though I [and others] had mentioned them many times before, and
while very recently the site was updated, they STILL persist.

This has only to do with the site server host (software issues ONLY) - and not anything else....
-------------
(a) A big issue is with that yellow 'marker' as a new_un_read_post.
A real nightmare! I see a new (useless) attempt tab as "Mark Forum Read" ?!
I compare this feature with good GW/FF which NEVER, ever missed a heart-beat...
-------------
(b) Uploading files/pictures from ones own PC is great!
(unlike GW/FF that needs a host server e.g., photobucket)
However, after doing so and editing the post, make sure you go
into the ADVANCED mode - else the files/pics go 'hiding' into some limbo mode!
I have read many unnecessary posts pointing to no_pics/white_space....

Soln: If in edit mode; WHY not just go 'auto' into the advanced mode?

Any more complaints/suggestions/solutions ... Please post here...

I am not sure if the problem I am mentioning can be corrected with the system software but there are irritating situations when wide pictures are posted and the text lines become miles long and no fun at all to read because the text lines in all posts get stretched.
Until it could be taken care of some other way, those writing a post can take care by resizing the pictures before posting and it will be much appreciated by all readers.

thanks Jon and thank you all the members for this great forum

- When several pictures are posted together, it will be nice if once we enlarge a pictures, if there will be a way to just press next or have an arrow to view the following pics (rather then closing that window, going back to original window pressing again on different picture, and doing that again and again)

- Also, with today's higher resolution on most cameras (mine is very basic and not expensive at all ), i find each of my pictures exceed the maximum size currently allowed to be attached.
for me, i always need first to find a software on line to downsize every file, save the new files and only then i can post pictures. this is not only time consuming but also makes it such that many pictures are of very inferior quality - very small on that new pop up window.

Very simple and not time consuming on windows based system useing free microsoft power tools image resizer once installed just right click your picture or group of pictures to resize it under 1 meg .
Most sytems have it already installed unless your machine is older.
It can be downloaded at Microsofts site otherwise.

Takes about 2-3 seconds, little more if you highlight a bunch of pictures to resize all at once.
It becomes a thumbnail and viewer can click on it and it enlarges.

Most of my pics when resized are between 80-120 kb and there just fine no blur
useing a older camera, that is if the orginal picture was good to begin with.   ; )

I rename file to proper "fig name" for storage and referrence and also watermark them useing another program.

thank you martin....will check it out

Yes Ottawa you are right, I though there was some thing wrong with my computer at first, the page was to big for my screen.  When I was reading the posting it did not make any seance at all, then I decided I was not getting the whole posting. When you have to scroll the whole posting it is harder to  read, you have to keep going back and forth and it is not fun.  It is not to bad if it is just one line. Yes this needs to be address.
Yes there have been a lot of good changers and it is making  the site a lot easier to use. Thank for all the improvements and keep up the good work

Recently I noted a "Subscribe" button at the bottom of home page.

However, I only see it while I am already logged-in.
Putting the mouse pointer on it, an explaining note pops up
"Subscribe to this forum"...
(heck I was one of the very first [charter] members to subscribe here).

While I am logged-off; that same button just vanishes!...

Shouldn't it be the other way around?
It would make it more easy for gaining new members as I hope it was intended to.

I am still (ever since day one) having (more) problems with this issue (a)

P.S.
Sometimes for a brief (on-off)  period it works very well.
Currently (using Firefox), it is at its worst I have ever seen.
Heads or tails?!

Hmm Gorgi, it works fine for me using a couple different versions of IE

In longer threads, I can't easily tell which is the 'last post read', or even which threads have new posts added if I get distracted - the yellow marker disappears too fast. Hence I end up re-reading some posts, and totally miss others.

Other than that, I am very pleased to have found this board. I've learned so much. IMO, it's so much better than GW.  :)

Gorgi i use firefox .

When i read a post "if " i click the back button to read next new post i notice the one i just read the box will stay yellow as if unread by me.

On the other hand when i read a new post " if " i then scroll up and click "forum"
the last post that i read that box will not be yellow showing that post as being read.

OK, I thought the issue was with the yellow folder for an unread TOPIC.  But it appears you're talking about posts.  It seems it is easier (or at least less information to store) to accurately say which topics are unread, and I think it gets this part right.

I actually had never noticed the yellow folder next to each post that changes color.  Now that you mention it, I do see that I can read a topic, exit, come back, and there is still a yellow folder next to posts I had read before.

For me, this is not really a nuisance, since I can quickly scan to see which ones I've read based on the post data.  But I could see it could be a nuisance for some users.

Yeah Rob i go down in order via the yellow folder next to the new post when i read it i then scroll up and click forums on top of page right next to where it says encanto farms nursery in light blue font. Then that folder is no longer yellow telling me i have read it.
When a person responds to that thread it turns yellow again which is normal .

I do notice and not a big deal personally for me if i read post and simply click the back button  the folder remains yellow.

Re-trying to re-define problem (a):

Whenever there is any new 'thread'  or  a NEWER 'post' added to old threads,
there is some indication alerting us viewers  that we have not viewed (read)  it.

GW uses a different 'color' on the thread 'name'  (in my case I see blue - for new).
It always performed flawless, on all my web browsers, irrespective if I use
nay of the 'back' , 'refresh'  or 'Return to the Fig Forum' buttons.

F4F  uses a colored  'flag' at the left-most end of the thread 'name' (in my case it is yellow - for [something] new).
In the past, my problem was that this F4F flag remained as 'un-read'  even though I did, did, did  SO.
It did not matter if I hit the 'back' or 'Forums' buttons (and whatever means I used to  get back).

'Sometimes';  things  just worked  fine (go FIGure?)....

What prompted me to re-post; I (stupid-me) forgot to mention that very recently,
I am now [also - concurrent] seeing quite the opposite: ....

New posts:  NOT being flagged as unread....

Who is in charge of the software development?!
[I hope it is not one of those cheap labor, incompetent, USA job stealing outfits]

What happens for me:  when I come here I see threads with new posts, or new threads, indicated with a yellow folder at the left. But if I don't get around to reading all those threads in a timely manner (like a cat, I can get distracted and follow a mouse elsewhere), and when I come back, all the unread yellow threads have lost their yellow indicators -whether I have read them or not- and I have to go from memory - which isn't as good as it used to be.  ;)

If you hit "reload" after reading a few threads, it will update which have been looked at, and which have not.

As a retired LEO, I respect that people do not want to post too much personal info on the web. But if every member filled out the signature info with at least your general area, state and USDA zone, I think it would be very helpful, especially for us newbies
John G.

Yes Jon,
Sometimes the "reload/refresh" screen does work, but mostly it does not...
I seems that there is some 'timing' parameter that is predicable as the weather!
It is time that you consult your 'sources'  to see what the real mechanics are.
Maybe there is some special settings that need to be done locally on the PC?!
This problem is not the end of the world; but it is very annoying (to say the least).
I hope that I am not making a 'mountain out of a mole hill '.
We all like to make this good FF just even better...

Gorgi i also use mozilla firefox and im wondering what your results would be if you try another computer out of curiosity if you had acess to one with firefox .
I do understand though otherwise what your experiencing is a real pain in the backside.

Browsers are different. My wife uses IE and sometimes cannot access websites or download pdfs, and such, and I have no issues with the same sites and files when using Firefox.

Per Martin's suggestion, I have this site on all my 3 browsers.

IE: worked perfect.
Chrome:  worked half way - ' <- back' did not work; 'Forums' button worked.
Firefox: currently nothing works (including 'reload')!

Funny:
There were some issues with the "Search" feature on the fig data-base [Varieties]
that it did not work with IE but worked fine with Firefox....hmm..

To the left of each posted message is a box which identifies the user with stuff like userid, avatar, etc.  It would be useful, especially in this forum, if that box would also list your location as specified in your profile.  My guess is, that is an easy fix in the setup of the forum software.

(x) One other suggestion (implied by Bronxsfigs) is to include a "Page nn" in the search feature.

(y) ALSO, very, very, annoying, after spending 10-20 minutes writing a new
post [actually a new thread]; suddenly it suddenly went kaboomm/pooff...

[Sorry, right now I'm fuming with/about the S/W]

gorgi....
Thanks for the reference to directly loading past, older pages.  I still can't get to pg. 102...or, 169.  I have no clue, and less patience with the page selection.  Fig Forum on GW has an easier selection option for my money....hit a number...page loads.

BUT....I still love the forum, and members.  I learn new things every time I go on.

Thanks Jon...
Frank
