Productive figs from U C Davis?

I am asking all forum members,if they had any particular cultivars that were ,High Q taste and very productive.
I was getting cuttings 4 times, but I can name only a few that have proven productive and HQ,in the same time.

My results:
Very Good and Productive:
Beal
Conadria (DFIC 5) The other one is not as good
DFIC 17 Brown Turkey,
I have a promissing one now that show a lot of fruits now in the third year:
White Texas Everbearing.
I have 4 supertasting but unproductive wich are:
Barnisotte Black(grow very slow but could surprise me,later)
Black Ischia
Col De Dame
Adriatic
5 good Tasting and not proven yet:
Skardu Black
Archipel
Osborn Prolific
278/128
San Pietro
And another 3 cultivars that never fruited, some are fruitting now
143/36,fruitting now
Jurupa never fruited(3years)
Green Ischia,fruitting now
I also had an Excel, that fruited but had nematodes in the container,so i used it for cutting, and trew away the soil and roots. The fruits were good, and i have reports from Gene in WAsh. DC,that this fig is vigurous and productive.
If you have a UC Davis Specimen, that is productive and good Tasting, please post here
This way we all get informed, and have a better ideea what to order, especially now when it cost much more for Shipping

Herman,
I know this year wasn't the best for figs in our area, but what do you think of these figs now, any other ones you can add to this list from uc davis?

Good questionj Bass?

Conadria-same as above
DFIC 17,late but a better fi9g

White Texas,late,not enough heat here
Barnisotte:Colapsed and died
Black Ischia,Colapsed,and recovering
Col de Dame,Late to9 ripe here

Skardu Black:Not ripe yet,late,this year

Archipel,late to ripe,2009

278/128:Strong grower,but larte to ripe 2009
San Pietro:Colapsed and died
143x36:Strong grower, and did ripe a few to date.
Jurupa, still did not fruit at all!!!!

Herman,
Here is my report on UCD cuttings:

These cuttings were started in Mar. '08, were very slow to root. They were potted up in June, 08. All are container grown. Considering the horrible weather here I think these are good choices for the North East. All of these are little more than a foot to 20" tall. Not all the figs ripened but those that did were good.  Under normal conditions all of the figs would have ripened.

Tena  14 Figs
Mission  6 Figs
Kadota  21 large figs
Col de Dame  6 figs

Violette de B. has some small unripe figs that won't ripen.
it is too cold. High today was 59*, cloudy, no sun by morning it will be 40*.

I have other mature trees that are loaded with unripe fruit
that normally would have ripened 2 months ago. The fact that these youngsters even put out figs under these conditions is remarkable.

i'm hoping that this nice florida weather agrees with those cuttings. i'm going to request several this year :). unfortunately, i'm running out of room to plant figs.

herman, did you see bad fmv in any of your figs from ucd cuttings?

Have to agree w/ Peg on Tena   Its a good one.

You did not mention the reason for trashing the ones you trashed. It may be a good information for some to know and compare.

Your post provides some consolation. That is the range of the numbers of fruits I was seeing on plants rooted in winter-spring of 2008 (but not from UC Davis). I was blaming my Zone5 and northern location. May be better times are ahead for my plants.

Today I had three guests and three rain-soaked ripe looking figs. I gave them one fig each and asked them if they were sweet and the consensus was 'kind of sweet'. I would not know what they meant by 'kind of sweet' because we have forecast of seven days of rain and cold weather and no more ripening. It will be soon time for digging out the half buried plants requiring root cuttings again which have been grazing far out of the pots over the summer.

Good figs, that are productive:
143-36
184-15 till this year.
Calvert
Barnisotte, though still small.
135-15s, except this year
276-49, except this year
Black Madeira, except for the long season issue
Gazir
Mary Lane
Monstrueuse - new winner this season
Native de Argentile
Excel
White Texas Everbearing
Golden Celeste

Showing good promise:
160-50
200-43
K-7-11
K-6-5
66-31

Good, but slow growing or not very productive:
187-25
Saint Jean
Vernino
Afghan A
Bournabat
Caucasus 3
Dauphine
Alma
Yellow Neches
Pastiliere

Jury's out:
276-14
171-59
Kadota 1
Marabout
Marabout c Smyrnay
278-128, potential
291
309-B-1, potential
Nazarti

Losers:
Archipel
Aked - should have fruited by now
Armenian
Blanquette - should have fruited by now
Kalamata - should have fruited by now
Karayaprak - should have fruited by now
Deanna
Tena
Early violet
Giant Amber
DiRedo
Walker (Brown Turkey equivalent)
Pied de Boeuf
Sant Cruz Dark
Rattlesnake Island

Caprifigs:
KAC-11-30E
T-30E
Roeding 3
Roeding 4
Stanford

Every each cultivar i had from Davis have Fig Mosaic.
Some like 278x128,Conadria,143-36,Archipel,Skardu Black, produce fruits and grow just fine, other  do not.
I do not claim I tried all the cultivars in their collection,so there might be clean cultivars I do not know, about them.

Santa Cruz Dark i have rooted 2 from UcDavis growing very well this season despite FMV .
Its a san pedro class fig ,  the main crop is very abundant on those plants and they are dropping with no wasp here as they should.
Next season i will report on the breba crop if they come to early no good for me they will drop as well,   these 2 plants i will not try to get them an early start like i do my other types in early spring  and try to let them stay dormant as long as i can.  So time will tell a little more next season. Depsite the FMV like i said they grew very well and i let them stay bushy.

Jon i see you have santa cruz dark  listed as LOSER was that because of the breba or main crop being the loser or both or somethng else?

I don't do brebas. They are all losers, here, with one possible exception this season. That said, the main crop figs persist here, whether because SCD is not a San Pedro type, or because I have gotten 100% pollination. However, the figs are not dry (ala caprifig) but are also not worth eating.

My Santa Cruz Dark produce main crop figs that ripen,  The figs are much like Giant Amber and are very good to excellent in taste.  This is only the 3rd year and a very bad growing season here in general.

Ottowan I use the eight year there out rule.  No edible figs, insipid figs or really bad growth after eight years they get the axe.

Jon thanks for the report which is interesting as your climate is hot and now i read this about it in another climate

Cmdrzog i remember our conversation earlier about this type.
Mine so far are all falling , i did have a few that actually looked liked they started to swell but those fell as well, they go from green to a very slight pale yellow then fall, also most eyes are white, BUT i did notice a few that were a light red color before dropping.

Both plants were loaded with figs, anyhoot i just left both plants alone with no trimming and will see what happens next season.

Course i wonder how long this type was actually tested and what climate it was tested in for being a san pedro type or perhaps somehow it behaves different in a hotter climate than a colder climate concerning the 2nd crop of figs if thats possible.
My curiousity now is at a high level with this plant now as to what it will do in the next few seasons .

Cmdrzog
I like your patience of 8 years assessment of fig plants before ditching.
Some of us are in a hurry for good reason of long experience in life but not not much of it in knowing fig varieties.

I also have a 4yrs Santa Cruz Dark, and it behave exactly like Martin said it does.
I will leave it inground, over winter to punish it.

Ottawan,

Do not know how long juvenility last in figs grown from cuttings, as some seem to be what they will be from season one, while other take a few years. I know that my seedling, Encanto, has taken 10 years to settle down to what it is going to be, and it is a lot different than the first couple of seasons. I have had some varieties that were unrecongnizeable from the first season to the second.

So giving a new tree a fair amount of time is important. Changing from a pot to in-ground can make quite a diff also. I have some varieties which are both in-pot and in-ground, and they do not look all that similar, sometimes.

So far my most UCD productive fig was the Conadria (UCD.05).
Picture shows one fruit (together with first time, from a 2nd
year old Ischia Green [also UCD] - 4 more figs to ripen).

Been hearing allot of good things about the 143-36 where can one find any info on that particular variant?

143-36 is a large fig. Lime green when ripe. Red interior. In my opinion this variant is not hardy for my zone6/7 and so far it had not been  productive. Ripens late. Nice looking fig apart from its good taste.

George I also had a couple of Ischia Green last year and they were good quality figs, withgood potential, for us here I think.
I also had one Calvert a few years ago,and I really liked the Flavor.
Then the tree died, and now I am growing a new one from The one cutting you gave me.It is growing very well Thanks again
Of course I keep the good cultivars, like Conadria ,Calvert,Green Ischia,143-36,despite them having Fig Mosaic virus.
First, important thing,is that it doesn't spread,in our climate here,I was observing them long enough to know.

Gorgi,

How is the flavor on the Conadria (ucdavis #5)?

Joe

Conadria tastes very averge to me.
I may just add that I think that I have neven seen it split!

For example, Calvert tastes much better to me, but sometimes it does split (no problem for me!).

As some FF member mentioned about asking the time:
It is now 6.35PM; and NO I do not know how my watch
mechanism "really" works...

HAHA

Go getum George
