Prolific Producers

Questions:

Main-crop figs are produced at each leaf node, on new wood.  So, the amount of figs depends on the amount of leaves produced on this new wood.  Is this always, or, mostly true?

Are there fig varieties that produce more than one fig p/leaf node?  After looking at the recently posted photos of Violette de Bordeaux, the trees look like there are figs growing from everywhere, but most seem to be growing from leaf-nodes.  Is it possible for figs to sprout from dormant buds also?  And if yes, is that tree producing a mix of both, breba, and main-crop?

i don't have enough tree to say if there are some that can put on more than one fig on the node.. but from the trees i have, i only see one per node. i just have more leaves on VdB than the others. however, i'm getting new branches on Paradiso Gene and Kathleen's Black and they are putting out more figs then they had in last month or so. not as many as VdB.

In my experience, one fig per node (very, very, very occasionally 2), so more fruit means you need more nodes, which means you have to encourage (fertilizer?) some additional vegetative growth each season in order to have new nodes to produce figs.

I have a few trees this year producing 2 per node- Kadota and Tarantella amongst them

Thanks forum members.

It seems that one fig per/node is about what we can expect...maybe two, sometimes.

Thanks again for the comments.

If one per node is the norm, then wouldnt' increasing the number of branches (and hence nodes) also help increase productivity? The more green leaves you have, the more surface area for photosynthesis and produced carbs, the more growth. As Jon said, perhaps fertilizing for additional vegetative growth. But then you run into the 'lower nitrogen' suggestion for increasing fruiting too.

Just noticed this few minutes ago on my Black Madeira .
Its a double .
Same pictures just different angle.

I have found doubles increases when trees are pruned properly especially kadotta type.. I have a tree that I prune that is riddled with doubles but it is older and in the brunswick family...

Interesting photos, and new information.  I guess some varieties can sprout more than 1 fig/node.  Genetics....pruning....culture?

Frank, take a look on my Prosciutto Nero fig,two figs on every node.

Marius....

Incredible photos!  Good genetics, and culture, no doubt.
