Can anyone give some comments between Pro-Mix HP vs Sunshine Sphagnum for fig cuttings or plant in container for idea ?Anyone use Sunshine Sphagnum Peat moss before ? Is this good or not ?
The sunshine is just regular SPM I think. Pro-mix has antifungal and vermiculate/perlite which increases water retention.
Pro-mix is better choice for both application, but it is too inexpensive for bigger container like 55 gallon = 200 lites. For fig cuttings, I would go for "Perlite" .http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/2-litre-pop-bottle-perlite-simple-rooting-7753159?highlight=perite&pid=1289531576
Sunshine mix with MYC. Antifungal and promotes root growth. Found and recommended at Away.Mixing with potting soil 70/30, plants and cuttings, topped 3" mixTrialing right now, started a week ago. Will let you know
For what it's worth, my experience with ProMix vs. Sunshine for rooting Figs is I used ProMix until they started adding a fungicide to the mix at which time my rooting success went way down. Mycorrhiza is a fungus that is necessary to initiate rooting and my opinion is the ProMix fungicide may inhibit Mycorrhiza. I switched to Sunshine #1 which is a peat & perlite mix and my Fig rooting success went back up to the level I was used to with the old version of pre-fungicide ProMix. Depending on your particular rooting technique, you may experience different results than I have had with these two mixes.Happy Growing, kiwibob, SeattleVisit my website: https://sites.google.com/site/kiwifruitsalad2
Mike:Thanks for info product of MYC, It looks amazing.
You can get pro-mix HP just with mycorrhizae and without the biofungicide. The biofungicide is a group of bacteria that eat the types of fungi that cause plant diseases. Stamets has them in his mixes as well. I haven't tried Sunshine #4, but #1 was terrible and full of fungus gnats. I assume you folks haven't seen that with #4?
Well, I have kept quiet on this because I haven't tried Sunshine #4. However, ProMix has never steered me wrong and I've rarely had issue with roots forming. I have about 50 cuttings in ProMix right now and they all have roots and leaves. I probably had 3-4 dry up on me, but when I planted them they had leaves and no roots, and I don't use humidity bins. I now don't plant without roots even if the leaves are growing in the moss.
I've noticed no slowing in root formation when up-potting using the bales of HP with just Mycorrhizae.
