Propagation Setup

This setup was inspired by RichinNJ and his setup, please take at look at his post From twigs to figs in 120 days, amazing results!

Look very good Justin!  I like Rich's technique too.  Whatever we can do to get those cutting to root, I'd say do it!  You got the same thermostat I got.  I'm getting ready to fire up my propagator later this week.  After I pot up about 20 trees and make room in my garage.  Post some more pics in a few weeks.

Great setup.  Good luck this winter.

Just a quick update on my setup, i have had phenomal rooting success using coco coir. Zero gnats and only about 3/100 cuttings had any rot. See above for full setup details.

I like to start them laying horizontally as i feel there is even aeration for the entire cutting unlike when vertically oriented in a cup. Also this typically results in more rooting near the middle and top of the cutting which is a plus.Once the cuttings have an inch or so of roots i transfer to individual cups.web-204446.jpg I let these go a little too long in the box, i will separate into cups this weekend. web-204501.jpg

Very nice pictures, Justin.  I have a few rooting in coco coir right now.  No gnats or mold after 10 days so far.

Justin, those cuttings look awesome. Well done! What varieties are you rooting?

Great job!   Have you developed a preference for coir over perlite with your success?  Kind of looks like you tried a few different mixes.

Looking good!

My preference for coco coir over perlite is pretty strong at this point!

My problems in the past with perlite were really due to not sifting the fines out and the cuttings inevitably loosing oxygen/aeration from compaction of the small particles.
I sifted all my perlite through an aquarium screen with 3/8 holes this time around it made a huge difference in aeration.

Even with this sifted perlite the roots aren't in as close proximity to each moist particle of the medium as they are in the coco...in coco, this equates to tremendous primary and nearly equal secondary roots forming very quickly.

I am using Canna Vega fertilizer right now about every 4 days or so...i will be adding some Microbe Life Vitamins & Aminos brand Micronutrients to make sure the plants are getting plenty of calcium, magnesium, boron etc. as i have been using Reverse Osmosis water which is void of these in significant amounts.

Judging by RichinNJ results with Canna Vega id say the micronutrients might not be necessary but i dont plan on transplanting these to soil till spring so thats a long time to go with only macros and i don't want any deficiencies to arise.

The online Marijuana Growing community has a tremendous amount of coco coir grow info!

Great Job Justin! Looks like you know what you are doing! Good Luck this Winter! : )

good

Great setup Justin, you know you are successful when that root growth supports the vegetation growth and you are experiencing a tremendous rate of root growth, good growing.

Very nice, Justin!  Next round of rooting, I'm thinking coir, as well.  The guy in the local hydroponics store highly recommends it, too.

Nice set up, I took some notes, looking good.

I'm thinking about using some next year as well. Saw some on Amazon, haven't really looked to see if it was a good deal or brand yet.

Can the coir be reused?

Coir can be reused for years, you many need to flush salts if used with fertilizers.

The cheapest coir on Amazon that's been washed are this

and this

They ship free with Amazon Prime, possibly also if you meet their minimum order.

The one mentioned above is over $25 with shipping, and so is one offered for $9.95.

The Kempf products are not washed and not recommended.
