Protecting Tree At Night Now (1st time)

Cecil if you see this this is the Big Martin Unknown ; )For the first time as i never tried this before but have the time now to do this im putting my unknown tree which always leaves me unripe figs, im putting in garage startin tonight and will whell out in morning when temps alow or at least open garage door for the eat morning to shine on it, i should have thought about this before temops were dropping a lot of nights in the 40s with daily highs in 50s now. Its supposed to be in 60s this weekend with some possible rain a so called warmup. Anyways when i was moving it 2 half ripe figs just fell off so i might have done this to late, i also had 2 nice ripe figs to eat today. Several things that i never paid attention to before that i have noticed on my tree's,now that weather has changed so have the figs somewhat, they turn darker when ripe inside and outside of fig, also they tend to lose there sweetness somewhat, although 1 fig off this tree kinda surprised me today with the inside color as it was brown sugar color , im not used to this color inside at all im used to light to dark red colors of my figs so i was skeptical to eat it im just not used to seeing that , but heck i tried it and i was shocked that it was very sweet on this 1 fig. So in a nutshell for me anyways for first time i pay more attention since retirement and now really notice how weather affects my tree's as it gets colder, so although too late to probably save a lot of the figs getting ripe (greedy) i try anyways and next year have my eyes open and do this earlier for this tree as others are done with there figs. Here for your pleasure i post some more pictures only wish i could come winter when not much conversaton on this forum, course i can always show pictures of some darn snow!

See section 8 at http://figs4fun.com/basics.html for my favorite tree protection method by someone who is very determined to have his gtree survive.

Thanks Jon i always enjoy your site.

Nice tree Martin. You work hard taking care of those figs. I'm glad all that TLC pays off with nice crops.

Thanks Steve,
last year when i counted figs from my tree's this one gave me total 30 and Oct 5 of last year i had last 2 ripe figs then that was it for tree as it left as usual green unripe figs and some almost ripe. To bad this type ripens late but i enjoy the taste. Like i think i said i should have started to put in garage when weather was dropping in 40s here at times then to driveway in mornings, but next year i will start when weather does this, as of now it going to get a littler warmer so i will leave on driveway close by, as for other tree's that produce this year they did very similar to what they did last year give or take a few days here and there although Sal's gave me more and hardy chicago gave me just slightly less as i need to trim and root prune this one. Can't wait till next year as i have some different ones and really love watching them grow.

Martin,
As I said on the other FF, beautiful place you have!

I couldn't help but notice the glossy paint job on your 2 wheel dolly, that little hubcap looks Racy to me!  Do you run when you are wheeling the fig trees in & out?

HEHE
Cecil

No no run with that i would break my neck i know your jokeing, my neighbor found this when he goes scrapping as i always had to borrow other neighbors for fall time, anyways it was rusty but old and built good with bearings in the rims of wheels , so neighbor said hey Marty why not paint it its yours i know you can use it i only have the 1 tree you gave me so i said i will wheel his tree for him when the time comes as he is 75 and can use the help. The thing is pretty darn heavy though i was surprised compared to the one i used to borrow. He's a great neighbor and loves figs, when we moved here in new subdivision 20 years back i was planting all our tree's as i did not want the builders tree's they were all the same kind so i wanted a little different for several years i dug a lot of holes around property planting tree's and things, one day he says to me when i was waist deep in a big hole planting this big evergreen " hey Marty they always said you Italians make good ditch diggers" i just laughed as he meant no harm . We talk thru the chain fence almost everyday and share our veggies , just made a pound cake with our kitchen aid machine and him and his wife really liked it. In winter we dont see each other to much except when we are blowing that darn snow outside then we stop the noise for a little bit and talk.
Martin

Your neighbor sounds like my kind of guy, not because of what he said about ditch digging, but a good sense of humor!

We have an Italian friend from way back, I give him what for every chance I get! I ain't gonna repeat what I call him, might get me kicked off this Forum!
He is one heck of a guy!
